I've thought about this, too - I've wondered if he's officially contractless, but getting money from a third party, to circumvent UEFA/La Liga finance rules, until Barca alleviate some of their financial chaos... I don't think there'd be anything to stop that happening, so long as he's paying tax on the income.

Could he become an ambassador or some such made up role to give Messi his income whilst accepting a lower income from Barca to help balance the books?
I'm sure there are rules in place to prevent that happening. I remember I looked for it before, but couldn't find anything. But surely there has to be?! Otherwise clubs would have taken advantage of it to circumvent FFP and all other kinds of domestic tax/income laws.
