It's never been the case though that the League Cup runners up get the Europa League/UEFA Cup spot if the winners have already qualified for Europe though has it?
I know that's the case for the FA Cup, but the League Cup's Europa League/UEFA Cup spot has always been allocated to a league position if the winners have already qualified, such as when United beat Wigan in 2006. Even when Villa lost a couple of years ago in the final, they 'officially' went into the Europa League because of their 6th place finish, not because of being runners up in the League Cup. It was just coincidence they finished both 6th and runners-up in the League Cup.
I need to read-up on it to 100% confirm but think that's right. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
