Reds takeover under threat

A £300million offer to buy Liverpool by New England Sports Ventures (NESV) will be withdrawn if the club is deducted nine points, Sky Sports News understands.

An NESV source has told Sky Sports News that a nine-point deduction would be a 'deal-breaker' but stressed that 'nobody wants to go down this route to madness'.

NESV's owners and directors were approved by the Premier League on Friday but their takeover is in doubt following a legal dispute between the Liverpool board and co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Liverpool could be deducted nine points by the Premier League if their parent company, Kop Holdings, goes into administration.

Kop Holdings owe in excess of £230m to Royal Bank of Scotland and must pay by 15th October.

It is understood that NESV remain 'hopeful' about the current situation but acknowledge a points deduction would 'change the nature of the purchase'.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports News understands that NESV have consulted former Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry over its bid.

It is understood Parry's advice was given for free, as part of a background discussion about the stadium and the Premier League, and there are no immediate plans for Parry to return to Liverpool should NESV's bid be successful.

John Henry has a great track record and really puts time and money into the team he buys. But his
publicity stunts, like the 'Red Sox nation,' and vendettas against individual owners and players are tiresome.

An owner who claims the Yankees are the "Evil Empire," was once a minority owner in the same team?

Bungles an open and shut free agent signing in 1B Mark Texiera that would have all-but guaranteed the Red Sox
a 2009 World Series title. Then uses his Twitter account to publicly slander the same player who has an MVP level
season..... dumb.

He's a George Steinbrenner wannabe; to hanging around him like a toady, to trying to emulate The Boss's Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network success with The New England Sports Network; hmmmm, prick envy???

He is no a savior for Liverpool F.C. than Hicks and Gillette.

He's right though. The media in England have painted Henry's ownership as having brought the Sawx from the dregs of MLB to World Champions; we know the truth is that Boston was always there or thereabouts and that NESV just got them over the hump a couple of times.

Fenway is a bit of a shithole. As a baseball fan it's something of a must-see for the age and heritage of the park. I visited recently, happily took my abuse as a Tigers fan, but came away underwhelmed. Frankly it makes Maine Road in its final days seem like a modern venue. On that evidence, I don't see the idea of similarly renovating Anfield as anything that the Red Scouse should be particularly optimistic about.

I think Henry is Randy Lerner Mk II. Liverpool will be safe from the abyss but Scouse fans should not expect European Cups.

The problem with wealthy individuals in general is that they tend to be businessmen, football clubs require enthusiast-owners not businessmen.

I went to a Redsox game at Fenway a few weeks ago when I was in the US with work. Have to say it was nice for the experience but I am not sure if I would ever go see a Baseball game live again... it's such a fucking drag... went on for over 3 hours I think and in the end the Redsox lost anyway... the crowd was fucking awful I thought, next to no atmosphere in comparison to a football match, no singing apart from the occasional "Let's go Red Sox" .... oh and they did the Mexican Wave like 3-4 times or so... wow...

Maybe it was because the Redsox had no chance of winning anything this season though.

Mate, I dunno.....I've been to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox, it was not exactly a spine tingling experience but I did enjoy it. If you want a fucking borefest....the NBA is the ticket. I've been to quite a few games and it bores me rigid. The action itself is great but the "spectator experience" is dire. Atmosphere is pap....ditto for the NFL (actually I went to a Chargers game that was ok but I've been to others that were terrible).

Only properly decent US sports "atmosphere" I've experienced was here

Reds sale given go ahead

George Gillett and Tom Hicks look set to be on their way out of Anfield, with a High Court ruling giving Liverpool power to push through a takeover.

The American duo, who have co-owned the Reds since 2007, have been reluctantly forced to concede that they cannot block a £300million bid from New England Sports Ventures.

NESV, who own the Boston Red Sox and are fronted by John W Henry, saw a formal offer accepted by the Liverpool board against the wishes of Hicks and Gillett.

With that offer set to see them make a sizeable loss on their investment, the Reds' co-owners attempted to disrupt proceedings and retain their stranglehold on the Merseyside giants.

However, their efforts to remove high-ranking members of the board proved fruitless and it quickly became apparent that they were fighting a losing battle.

Taking the matter to the High Court was Hicks and Gillett's last chance to stave off a sale they did not sanction and ensure they continued to hold power at Anfield.

Those efforts have been in vain, though, as Mr Justice Floyd has given Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton the go-ahead to sell the club.

He sided in favour of the Royal Bank of Scotland, who are owed over £230m by Hicks and Gillett following their takeover.

The deadline for repayment on that loan was set at Friday, with fears raised that Liverpool could be docked nine points were the debt not settled and the club's holding company, Kop Holdings, were forced into administration.

That situation will be avoided should a takeover agreement with NESV now be put in place, with Henry making it clear that all outstanding debts will be cleared should he take charge.

Hicks and Gillett had asked a judge to delay the hearing of an application by RBS for mandatory orders but, at the bank's request, injunctions have been imposed on the two men requiring them to restore the original constitutions of the companies and managing directors.

While the way has now been paved for NESV to complete a takeover, there is still a chance that a rival bid from Singapore billionaire Peter Lim could be negotiated.

He has vowed to stump up £320million in cash to get the club back on an even keel, with £40m available for players in the January transfer window.

The saga could rumble on for some time yet, with a takeover deal now needing to be thrashed out, but Hicks and Gillett have been refused the right to appeal, meaning one hurdle has been cleared.

A statement released by Liverpool on their official website read: "We are delighted that the court has clarified the issue of board composition and has removed the uncertainty around the sale process.

"We will now be consulting with our lawyers and planning for a board meeting tonight (Wednesday). A further statement will be made in due course."

Yea I reckon it was probably down to the fact that the Red Sox did really badly and had nothing to play for this season.

One niggling question is how are NESVs going to fund this deal, is it going to be cash upfront or are they going to mortgage it up again?
