So why was he not called up last season if he played so well? To that I can only answer either a) he didn't play that well, or b) it was Wigan and now he has only been called up cos he's got a red shirt on.

cleverley is clearly not "shit" but is he really England material?

Bridge'srightfoot wrote:I'm all for pushing through younger players into the England fold. Who should have been called up ahead of him?

Mark Davies at Bolton. I doubt Capello knows who Bolton are, let alone who plays for them, but you can bet your arse that Davies'll get a call up if united sign him in the January window. Perhaps he picked the wrong Davies last season, eh.

On a tangent, I have to say that I find it slightly uncomfortable that a drunken Scotsman has got so much influence on who is picked for the England team.

On your first point, I don't know. I watched him last season ans was impressed by him. Perhaps Capello was waiting to see if he could carry on his form.

He's a prospect and that's all he is, why not give him a chance to shine on the big stage? Lampard is ageing, as is Gerrard and Parker, there is a shortage of quality players in that position.
He has been impreesive this season and has more than held his own in a strong side. No one was moaning when Richards got a call up at 17.
Mark Davies has hardly set the league alight either.

Exactly the reason I don't support my own country. What a load of bollocks. A rag is a rag. You think if he had a stormer the paper wouldn't ram it down our throats which club he plays for? The thought of cheering on scum like Shrek or Ferdinand is disgusting. Couldn't care less if they've changed their shirt from red to white!

I suppose it's down to preference then. When England play in the world cup, I support all the players, I don't differentiate between their clubs. When Rooney, Ferdinand etc play for England they are representing England, not United and I'll support them just as I would any City player.
That's the problem with most fans, they view international football as a continuation of the club game.

Actually the one or two occasions when Bulgaria pressed him he bottled it putting balls straight out or being caught in possession. He virtually never got past the half way line and basically had a very easy time of it. Let´s see when he´s put under real pressure from half decent teams. In fact he´s not even been tested in the PL - I´d like to see him with our 3 attacking mids running at him

That. ^^^

Fact remains- if he was still at Wigan and playing to the same level he is now he would be no where near the England squad.

Based on what? Look at Cahill, Parker, Upson, Bent and others. Capello has shown he'll pick players from 'lesser' teams if they are performing well.

true, I suppose but in my opinion, if you're playing well you'll get your chance. Look at Kevin Davies! I think Capello is far too professional to be so narrow minded.

The point is Cleverley is a promising young English player, of which is a bit of a rarity nowadays sadly. I'm all for giving them a chance when they''re young. He didn't even play! He was just simply in the squad. I don't recall anyone moaning when Micah was given a cap at 17.

Maybe it was silly example but still, I see no reason why he shouldn't of been called up and there are plenty of people on here calling him overhyped and shite simply because of who he plays for.

If Capello had any inkling in the past few months that he would put Cleverly in his squad why didnt he ensure he was a regular for the 21's in the eurpoean championships only 6 weeks ago? If he had honestly earmarked him for his wigan form he would of made sure pearce played him at every possible opportunity to gain experience, when in fact he didnt and he was rotated with a player out of position(mancienne) and some other average premiership footballer(muamaba, rowell, henderrson).

Fact of the matter is he is currently riding the wave of the rags impressive form, you swap him for carrick, giggs anyone else in that team and they still walk those game. Once they get some tough games he will be found and the media will knock him down as quick as they built him up, just watch.....
derby day the scores were level,
then the goat was fed by neville,
silly boy should know for sure,
feed the goat and he will score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i reckon any english player that plays for the rags is more than likely going to be picked for the national team whether hes good or bad!! its nearly always been like that.
