Will he be banned from all competitions? Assuming so he'll still make the final right, would be good if we have a fixtures section on this forum so we could see what games he'll miss.

That's no good - it only has one of our home games against Wigan listed!

I'm not having this "he threw an elbow first" argument. Sergio should know better and should not have done what he did. It will not surprise me one bit if he gets a ban. Players of the ilk of Sergio are going to elbows thrown at them, and studs racked down ankles etc because of the quality they have and if the opposition can do something to throw him off his game they will.

It's part and parcel of the game. He will know today that he let himself down and he could have really thrown the semi away for us. Luck was on our side yesterday on another day he would have gone and I couldn't have argued with that decision.

If the ref saw it and it goes in his report then can he be punished? I thought that he had a good view and so clutching at straws I am hoping he viewed it as an eye for an eye, or an elbow for an arse?

Just looking on the FA website - Graham Le Saux seems to explain that only unseen OFF THE BALL incidents can be subject to review. If the incident has been seen "the coming together of two players" then there can be no review even if the full extent of the incident has not been seen.

I am not justifying the challenge but given that this was an on the ball incident and a foul was given there seems to be no way this can be reviewed by the FA.

I watched a video on this link

pretty sure there have been bans handed out for poor tackles post match for on the ball incidents, didn't mario get one against parker?

anyway, if he gets away with it, fantastic, lets hope he learns from it - if that was seen and he got a straight red that could have derailed our title charge (had we been in one!) - bad time of the season for a challenge like that

The difference seems to be whether the ref or any other official has seen any part of the incident. They clearly did in this case as a free kick was awarded.

"Following a review of the FA's position at the end of season 2011-12 all football stakeholders agreed to maintain the current stance that where at least one of the match officials has seen the coming together of players retrospective action is not taken regardless of whether the officials have seen the full extent of the challenge!"

It's just the FA being consistent. As I said earlier on, they didn't punish Mario last year and it's also how McManaman got off with his tackle for Wigan.

The tinfoil hats can go away for the time being!

Whilst I don't want Sergio banned, this rule needs reviewing. The ref saw the incident from one angle where he thought a free kick was fair. It's only from a different angle that its obvious it should have been a red. Same goes with the Wigan fella. A ref can see something from forty yards away. Doesn't mean he's going to see it as clearly as he wished and interpret it the same way had he been four yards away. If the disciplinary panel can use tv evidence to overturn an incorrect red card, it only makes sense the reverse should apply.

Providing every minute of every game is reviewed, not just the ones on TV or the ones where the media want to hype something up...
