Is there some sort of record for longest posting streak without any positive comments on the club? He has to have a reason to still be here, nobody can be this sad for this long.

Liverpool announce loss of nearly £50m in latest annual club accounts

Loss places Liverpool's ability to conform with Uefa's Financial Fair Play rules in doubt despite revenue growth and success on the pitch this season

They may be well on course for a return to the Champions League but Liverpool were facing a battle to stay there on Tuesday night after revealing they lost almost £50 million last season.

The club’s 2012-13 annual accounts made for grim reading in the new era of Financial Fair Play, the regulations which they must adhere to if they are not to risk their expected return to the European elite being short-lived.

Uefa only last week vowed to clamp down on “greed, reckless spending and financial insanity” among teams competing in its tournaments, with the first of them due to be punished next month for exceeding losses of £37.2 million over two years.

Liverpool lost more than £100 million between June 2011 and June 2013 – they reported a loss of £40.5 million for the 10 months until June 2012 and £49.8 million last season – a figure that would have almost certainly breached FFP regulations were they already competing in Europe.

Fortunately for the Anfield club, their accounts will not be scrutinised by Uefa’s Club Financial Control Body – whose sanctions range from fines to bans – until this time next year. Less fortunately, they will be judged over three seasons in which their aggregate losses also cannot exceed £37.2 million. That is, of course, after various exemptions are taken into account, particularly spending on infrastructure and youth team activities.

Liverpool insiders were uncertain whether or not they would have met the FFP threshold this year but were confident the club were heading in the right direction in terms of complying when the time came.

They were also unclear about exactly how much of a profit or loss they would have to make this season in order to meet that target although anything other than a dramatic reduction in losses would appear unthinkable.

Ironically, the club would not be in this position had they not dropped out of the Champions League four years ago and missing out on at least £120 million in revenue over that period.

Infrastructure costs were certainly not insignificant at Liverpool between 2011 and 2013. The club wasted millions on stadium-related projects under the regime of George Gillett and Tom Hicks and their 2012-13 accounts show they were still saddled with debt related to aborted attempts to build a new ground in Stanley Park.

It also showed current owners Fenway Sports Group injected an interest-free, inter-company loan of £46.8 million to pay off liabilities from such projects dating back up to seven years.

The club are expected to plough even more money into the redevelopment of Anfield in the near future.

Their income, meanwhile, will be boosted by their share of year one of the massive new £5.5 billion broadcast deal which began this season, although they will have to wait for a potential £30 million Champions League windfall until next year.

The club, whose turnover increased by nine per cent to £206.1 million, have signed a number of significant sponsorship deals this season, which will continue to bolster commercial revenues which rose to £97.7 million, from £63.9 million.

Ian Ayre, the managing director, said: “These results demonstrate that the financial health of the club continues to make good progress as we continue our journey to transform the club on and off the pitch.

Liverpool were the sixth of the top-seven Premier League clubs to publish their 2012-13 accounts this season, with only Tottenham Hotspur to come.

Unlike nearly all their rivals, Liverpool’s numbers will not be scrutinised by Uefa until next season but that did not stop them releasing some information on the current campaign in relation to transfers and wages - which are undoubtedly covered by FFP.

They revealed their transfer and contract activity – including the extension of Luis Suárez’s deal – cost them £53.3 million. How much that affects their ability to meet FFP will only become clear this time next year.

Poetic justice if they do fail; especially with their vulture owner John Henry being such a prime-mover in the conspiracy cartel of old-money owners questioning every dollar of City's endorsement deals

Ya right, Platini announces FFP to be scrapped due to Liverpool failing the regulations we put in place to get them back in the Champions League.

Yes indeed.

Next season will be harder for them imo, not easier. The level of success their front players are having, is almost unique for such an incomplete team, & imo impossible to sustain in most seasons. And next season, from the start, they will have aquired 'stop at all costs' status, which is not currently the situation for teams playing Liverpool.

We had to adapt a lot to master that, & still haven't perfected it at all. They have gone to great lengths to try & persuade the opposition to treat them as a winnable 'we can beat these' kind of game, rather than mug them.

Liverpool and Monaco are safe for 2014-2015 and don't need to pass the break-even to be in the CL next season
