Id rather spend 10 million on a manager who would actually deliver consistency.
I think the owners have a long term plan which involves success both on and off the pitch. I think right now respectability off the pitch is more important than success on it. They do not want to be perceived as big time charlies who splash the cash and chop and change managers on a whim as that will leave them open to major critism.
For that reason there is no way they will get rid of Hughes before the summer, even if ot looks like we will finish 10th. Whether you like it or not Hughes is a respected manager in football circles (rightly or wrongly), if hes fired mid season it leaves question marks over the owners (rightly or wrongly). If we finish the season in 10th no-one will bat an eyelid if Hughes is fired.
From the owners point of view they want to be the best club in teh world in 5 years, is it such a big difference if it takes 6?
But surely they don't want to be seen as backing failure either? Even they must have a tipping point where they say enough ius enough! And we know that they are aware of the need for speed in the early stages (get CL income to thwart UEFA) and that they did what was needed by bringing forward spending to last summer that was originally intended to be spread over the next couple of years. If they think that spending is not going to succeed with JLM in charge, will they not do what is needed again?

They won't back failure, but I think they will wait until they have confirmed evidence of it. Even now you regularly hear the press on the radio and podcasts etc saying that give it time and Hughes will trun it around, hes a good promising manager etc. If he turns this season round like he did last season after Christmas, we will be on for a top four place so the owners could be pummeled in the press for getting rid now. We score almost every game so just a couple more clean sheets and we would start quickly moving up the table so its not as though too much needs fixing. If we don't finish where the owners want to finish this season they will get rid they are not stupid. The question is what do they consider acceptable?
I think they think more long term, so 6 months is not much in a 5-10 year plan. They will decide at the end of the season.

We were always a laughing stock.... now we're a rich laughing stock.
I don't know if Hughes is the problem, I honestly don't. I see the line-up every week and I have to say I'm never disappointed with them. I like the type of football we try to play and I don't believe Hughes tells the players to play in a certain way... I don't think he makes these players worse because that would be a really difficult thing to do,
However, it looks from the oputside that the players don't fear him enough to respect him and no matter how good he is potentially, I'm starting to think some of the big time charlies are thinking that they are better than Hughes and you just can't have that.
We have looked like a team once this season in the league and that was against Chelsea. Other than that, its been like we went out and put 11 fantastically gifted players together...
I think if Hiddink (and he's the only one I'd advocate, forget Mancini, Zico, Le Guen and all these other tools that Socrates constantly bangs on about) came in now, we would break into the top four next season. The thing is, we could still break into the top four this season if we stick by Hughes. I honestly don't know for sure and neither do any of you.
Al I do know for sure is that I fell the same this season as I've felt almost every other season... frustrated as fuck.

hmmm i think you are slowly turning against the inept one.
johnpb78 wrote:Sorry mate, I cannot accept the view that you put forward, that he "turned the season" round after xmas last year, as though he is completely absolved from blame for being in the bottom 3 on xmas day in the first place. It was only turned round because his team were so fucking shite in the first half, so it would have been hard NOT to have a better 2nd half of the season.
The fact was we should never have been in the predicament we were at xmas. We are now seeing a carbon copy of what happened last year, managers have worked out how to play against us, the results slowly slide firstly into mediocrity, then into farce.
This season, we have proven quality defenders who mysteriously have forgotten how to defend - as we did last season
This season, we have a team who sometimes look like they dont give a fuck - as we did last season
The quality of player who doesnt give a fuck, and the quality of the defenders who have become shite is significantly higher, thus questions have to be asked of the one who calls the shots - the manager who controls selection, training and tactics.

It really is starting to look that the team have lost confidence in Hughes too - in the same way that the Chelsea players did with Scolari (he had a good start and went down hill quickly), its taken a little longer but these are all players (with the odd exception) that have played under top class, intelligent managers.
They recognise weakness and will recognise when someone doesnt know what he's doing and will allways compare things to how 'X' would have done things ...

Yes mate, so whats going wrong against 'lesser' teams (were we're lucky to get a draw) and get torn a new asshole by a 4th spot pretender?

its called consistency at a high level and we just dont have it. Its not 1 mans fault its several of them that need a good kicking. I dont care what tactics and formation hughes employs, the 11 that wear the shirt should give 100%. There is no excuse for not trying.
