It is kind of an anti-climax signing. All this talk about Gourcuff, Higuian, Torres and Di Maria and our first signing is James Milner. Like ross will tell you(at length) average player playing in a well constructed team, looks better than he is.

Cut a very long story short. There are certain decent players MON can turn into world beaters on there day and Milner is one of them. The fact they are even considering selling and they are just playing hard ball at the moment waiting on us folding like a pack of cards like we did with Lescott.

He’s no better than Johnston or SWP and is not the midfield dynamo we require. I’d be rather concerned with what MON might with an extra 30 Million to spend. It’s alright giving Arsenal money for players last season as we were never really interested in catching them nor were they ever going to spend the cash on players.

Villa are a different kettle of fish and can spend what they bring in and they will be soon be receiving 30 Million for a easily replaced player.

It wouldn’t surprise me if one Ireland/Richards/Ned were part of this deal. I dread to think how good of a player any of them would be under MON.

Milner can play either in the centre of midfield or on the wing and has been improving year-on-year since he first burst onto the scene.

Milner and Barry in centre mid next season would work well in my opinion.

This.

This could work well in a side finishing 5th or 6th. Does James Milner in midfield challenge for a title? I don't think so, but I hope I'm wrong

compare him to Darren Fletcher... these are the type of hard working, underated, no nonsense players that it makes sense to have in a top team/squad... no qualms from me!

the exact example i was going to give mate, a team of superstars isn't going to win you a league

Yes - that git is one of the 2 reasons the scum got away with it last season - I see him as better than Fletcher in the long run - more versatile

I would say exactly the same. What O'Neil is absolute master of is making decent players look world beaters in specific role. Look at one dimensional players like Carew and Milner shining in his system. That system is built around certain types of players to certain roles.

Our system is nothing like Villa's. We would see Milner of Newcastle how was constantly running blind alleys rather than Milner of Villa who is instructed to run certain type of routes and do EXACTLY certain type of things in certain positions. Villa's system don't need any sort of flair or football brain. It demands powerful running style and work rate first and foremost and at that Milner is at his best. However, when you are trying to feed Tevez rather than Carew, you also need to keep up with their phenomenal speed of thought. Our players with REAL football brain like Ireland were struggling with it, never mind Milner.

Again, I'm not saying he is shite. He isn't. But I don't think he'd suit our system. I sincerely hope Robbie Manc has been part of the planning process for this transfer and has a genuine plans for him in our system. Otherwise we are looking at the bottom of the worst rabbithole in whole Director of Football system, players being bought for big money who don't even fit managers plans. One of the main reasons why I don't like that system.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

The days of having a manager in charge of all aspects has gone - and rightly so - otherwise you would have more Portsmouths.

I would think that:

a) We must believe that our manager has involvement in the slection of players we buy - at the least a power of veto

b) Therefore we must assume that Bob is happy with this transfer

c) People on here put Bob ahead of MON in the manager capability stakes - so we mst be confident that he can get at least as much out of Milner as MON did

I think we should have learned by now that the PL requires a mixture of craft and graft and you cannot have too many 'craft only' players. I think that Milner could be an astute buy (a bit of de jong's effort with more attacking contribution) - but it depends what else happens in the transfer market - e.g. a 'craft midfielder'

I agree with the first part, so I deleted it.

But I think Bobby has been under this system before and would know the relationship he has to have with Marwood in order for it to work. Marwood on the other hand was brought in I believe as a mate of Cook's and who knows if he understands it as well. I am sure Bobby has submitted a list of names he is wanting and if Milner is on that list it is for a reason. I am also confident that if he doesn't get his first choice and Milner is his second or third(Gourcuff, Gerrard) that the follow up signings will have to reflect the first in order to accommodate the system, which is why I am underwhelmed with the whole thing.

I can see Milner as a filler signing who we hope can adapt to plug gaps we may experience down the road, but he shouldn't be the first signing as I believe the first is a statement of intent and if we were to get a Luiz, di Maria, Torres, Gerrard or Gourcuff it would send out a message to future signings that we are in this for the right reasons and lofty goals.

It was made plain to everyone (ie leaked by the club) that Mancini gave Cook & Marwood a list of players whilst in Abu Dhabi. They are now acting on it.

Mancini tried to sign Gago & Mariga in Jan. Both workhorses with far less attacking talent than Milner.

Oh settle the fuck down, just discussing the pros and cons..are we not allowed to do that now?

He will get the same support from me as any other player once he has signed, nothing wrong with an honest critique before then is there?

As nothing had been announced today and he keeps harping on about either gerrard or another big player, with hints of stalling I thought he was a bullshiter.

He has got many things on the money in the past. BUT other things haven't come off. For example, people have broken that we were talking to terry and Eto and that we bid for Madriga. But these deals didnt happen, so whoever breaks the news looks like a mug.

Im confident we have made signings and it does look good. I believe we have been in for Gerrard, but then if he says no (personal opinion is that hes stalling) then Tolmie looks like a bullshiter.

It seems like we are approaching a couple of big players and they want gurantees that others are signing (ala tevez).

Tolmie knows nothing mate, don't get sucked in.

Its well known he actually stole his "terry exclusive" off of this site, off of one of our own legends last summer.

Do not trust him, i read his stuff last summer.. half believed he knew stuff for a time but it doesn't take long before his "deals stall/ fall apart/ blagh blagh blagh"... he's just the typical billy bullshitter!

I know its boring without any solid news on signings but believe tolmie at your own peril! That guy will keep you guessing about nothing forever!

I believe he's posting what people inside the club are telling him. Some of the things he has got right were deffo insider info. Both him & Ajay like to embellish stuff though.

The thing people have to realise is that A) some of the people at the club may be feeding him disinformation, deliberately or accidentally B) many of the deals we try to conclude may not happen & C) what appear to be done deals often aren't & fall apart at the last minute. It's only done when it's signed.

That Ajay bloke told everone about Kaka weeks before the press got hold of it then got hung drawn & quartered as a wum when it fell through at the last moment because someone had told him Kaka had said yes. Gary Cook probably thought the same!

Kids & retards spitting their dummys out & looking to lash out in disappointment.

We will be talking to a lot of players. Most of them won't sign & if they did we'd have too many! It's interesting to get an IDEA who we're talking to. That's ALL those blokes can be trusted for.

Deluded doesn't even begin to cover it. Clubs take us to ransom over players and Milner wouldn't be worth £15M if it wasn't City coming knocking. Comment that we have made our own bed with concerns to transfer fees, but £25.5M for Tevez and these idiots want £35M for Milner?

Fact is we'll probably pay well over the odds for most if not all of our signings. Clubs will refuse to sell to us otherwise & if we want the players we'll just have to pay it.

It has the unfortunate knock on effect of ruining most of Manchester Utd's transfer plans as they can't get any 'value' in the market. I recon we can cock them up just by registering an interest in a player & not even bidding.

Pity.
