Probably the first time I've ever agreed with Mills. Hughes has such high opinion of himself and his "methods" that he has miscalculated the situation thinking one of the big boys would appoint him.

Although why is Mills now "former Manchester City hardman". He barely fucking played for us and just picked his paycheck.

Hughes did better than OK at Blackburn (getting them into the top 6) and with Wales (getting to the playoff for Euro 2004). Regardless of how you interpret his time at City, both of those achievements by far outweighed expectations. He also took Fulham from 13th last season to 8th this season. The one aberration on his record is his first season at City, when we went from 9th to 10th. Everywhere else he's picked teams up and carried them forwards straight away.

As for Danny Mills, he should just shut up and fuck off. Forever. What a pointless, horrible bastard. Why do they keep digging him up for his opinion? He should be ashamed to be seen in public after his 'career' as a player.

Hughes did "well" for Blackburn and mostly "ok" for us and Fulham. Fulham were UEFA Cup finalists when he took them over. So all in all he is ok to decent Premier League manager. He has done absolutely NOTHING to warrant one of the top jobs though. People were critical of Mancini when he took over but look at his record of winning stuff. He deserved his chance.

Mills can suck my balls though.

I didn't either.

It's a big gamble. He is perfectly entitled to leave Fulham if he's only on a one year deal, but he wants to challenge for titles in England, Spain or Italy? Does he think he is going to get Inter or Real Madrid? No top club is going to look around and say, yes, we'll have that guy who did ok with Fulham. Once he's out of a job, people might forget about him.

It's entirely possible that Fulham said there's no money available, but if that was the case he could have reasonably quit and said I've done as much as I can. Instead, he's saying to the world in general that if you employ him, as soon as someone 'bigger' comes calling he will leave.

Also, it's getting annoying that Hughes still refers to himself as a young, ambitious manager. He's nearly 48! Almost all managers of top clubs have won trophies before then.

He's deluded if he thinks he's good enough for a top club. He showed how out of depth he was during his time with us. Fulham was a good fit for him. Spurs would probably be the highest he could manage at in England, and even that's pushing it.

I consider any manager below 50 to be young personally.

My point was more around he thinks he's good enough to manage a top club, yet he's never won anything as a manager nor is remotely close to winning anything.

The best managers in the business all won stuff early in their careers, regardless of who they managed. Here are some top managers and the ages they won their first trophy:
Mancini - 36
Mourinho -38
Guardiola - 38
Ferguson - 45
Wenger - 38
Benitez - 38
Ancelotti - 43
Hiddink - 40
Rijkaard - 42

It's laughable that Hughes considers himself amongst that group. Even O'Neill won trophies with Wycombe in his early 40s and won the League Cup with Leicester at 45.

Fair enough - a manager shouldn't automatically have to have won something to be considered 'good' or capable though. It's all relative. Having said that, it's a results oriented business and trophies carry weight.

Ferguson was 38 when he won his first title with Aberdeen.

Personally I think that if you are ever going to be REALLY top manager, you would've won something by the age of 45.

Hughes is fine midtable manager. Slightly better than Fat Sam, slightly worse than O'Neill. Million miles from being top 4 calibre and I say this putting my Hughes hate aside.

Martin Jol is the new Fulham manager.

I actually think they have made slight upgrade in the end.

Well I didn't see that coming. Do people reckon Fulham will have a go in Europe next season, then?

Might as well. They won't finish top six and won't get relegated.
