Do some research into how many people with low-paid jobs took time off last year citing depression as the reason.

I don't know how right or wrong I am, but I always imagine a link between depression and education/self-awareness. It's a modern term after all, which was given a physical-medical diagnosis ('melancholy') in Europe just a couple of centuries ago. I suppose my point is that there's probably a lot more DIAGNOSED instances of depression in developed and post-religious societies. In some places, it's a social construct that just won't exist.

Or so I imagine. I don't have a very informed view on mental health.

Basically MDD (the kind of depression I assume we are talking about here) was used in medical sense in 70's.

I believe that as late as mid-60's upper classes here suffered from "hysteria" or indeed "melancholy". No one in working class suffered from any of that. They just topped themselves.

Lee Marvin had 'melancholy' in 'Paint Your Wagon'. The remedy to to fall down muddy drunk and get your pardner - Clint Eastwood - to carry you home!

Still works for most now.

Eastwood seems really old now. I don't think he could carry anyone anymore.

He can still carry an entire film though. Have you seen Gran Torino? Awesome.

So what you are basically saying is that we'd all be better off living in North Korea?
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

It was awesome but he was struggling to deal with that Korean kid who weighted less than wet sock. I'm pretty sure he couldn't carry drunken grown man anymore. Therefore we are left to deal with depression other ways.

Shame. Dirty Harry era Eastwood could've carried entire nation worth of depressed people. But as we saw in The Dead Pool all good things come to an end.

When I was about 10/11 the dad of my best mate who was a great bloke, made us all proper sized goals with netting the bollocks, hung himself, bang 6 weeks holidays, played football with us the day before Never understood it 30 odd years on, the man was a legend to us kids, took us to maine Road, I have never ever forgot that, I am sure this family of Blues have never ever got over it, Now as an adult If I had an any idea the man was so tormented/depressed, whatever. I would do what I could to help him and any other person for that matter.

Peasants dont have to worry about much other than getting the pig to the market.....compare that with queueing up at the dole office.

I do reckon that some people will get signed off with depression to get time off. In fact I know of two people who have done just that, but seeing as public sector carries on paying a full wage for six months and it's hard to firmly diagnose, it can be viewed as the new 'bad back'. Proper depression is a deep dark place and as someone put it earlier it's a kind of difference between saying you got flu when you've got a bad cold when in fact if you really have flu your in bed for at least a week.
I haven't a fecking clue what I'm doing! Gillie come back man I want my sig back. As the Photobucket thingy gone?

Why do people continuously assume that depression and a lack of affluence are linked.
Depression is because something that should be working in the body/brain isn't. Fuck all to with the size of your TV screen or where you go on holiday.
Who defines that it is harder to be happy if you're poor?

Me.

I was a lot happier when I had shed loads compared to when I didn't...it was depressing actually.

I never said I wasn't shallow..I said I was happy when I had plenty..then I became unhappy (depressed) when I didn't.
