I agree that he may not have been good enough during his time here, but he's 21 years old for fucks sake. CB's rarely come through as a finished product that early, and I do think he was thrown in too early. Especially coming from Serie A to the prem, the change in pace must have been like a blur to him.
He may have been rightly criticized for some of his performances, but in no way does he deserve a lot of the comments directed his way. If he is out and back to italy, firstly i'm sure he'll be relieved ... secondly, I wish him all the best and hope he uses his time here to motivate him to improve himself and reach his potential. I think it's really curious that such an innocuous character would be the target of this level of abuse.
Which Italian team did he turn out for?
I'm sure we signed him for Partizan?
sorry you're correct ... for some reason I had already connected him with fiorentina in my mind ... but i'd imagine coming from Partizan was an even larger step up.
Perhaps, but perhaps it's also a step up for a player who is championship standard to be playing in the Premier League.
He has been at City for over a year. He has played in the Premier League in cup semi finals. So what do we see when he's asked to play in pre season friendlies, with no nasty City fans to boo & shout at him ? He's exactly the same shit as he was when we signed him a year ago; no improvement whatsoever. Slow, panicky, unable to read the game, making the wrong decisions & arse raped on every 1v1 situation. When does this 'improvement' from Darren Wassell to Bobby Moore actually start ?
And where are people getting the idea that centre backs only start to show talent when they are above 22 ? Every single decent cb I've ever seen have been spotted as kids & progressed naturally. Even the much maligned Lescott was very highly rated at Wolves. Rio, Terry, even Micah & Ned were miles better than Savic when they first appeared as kids.
mate, I admitted in my opening post that he probably wasn't good enough ... I've not said anywhere that he'd become magically better when he gets older, or that he is a talent for his age. All I said was you don't find FINISHED PRODUCTS at CB that young very often, and I hope he uses his time here as a motivation to fulfill his potential when he moves on.
I do think he had/has potential, and I also think that he was never going to fulfill it here after the bad start that he had and the criticism he came under. I also think his development could have been handled better, and some loan deals BEFORE being put into our first team could have helped.
In the end, he's responsible for his own performances, and no one can argue that, I just think it's a shame that he wasn't able to develop while here and I wish him well. Is that the part that irritates you so much, that I wish him well?
Nothing irritates me, other than watching Savic. I wish him well too, I just hope it's true that he's going.
And my whole point was that I didn't expect to see a finished product, not even a half finished product, I expected to see some kind of ability with which to work & improve. I saw a slow, average height, non tackling defender with no positional sense who was no better than some of the reserve team lads we were about to ditch.
People saying he was comfortable on the ball; yes he was, until someone pressed him. Richard Dunne was often comfortable on the ball until someone ran at him, then he fucked up, which is exactly what Savic does, even in friendly games. He will never even be in the same league as Dunney as a defender though & Dunney was sold because he's not good enough.
