Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

The whole deal was weird - no buy back or sell on, that’s out of character for City. He asked to go out on loan and was told by Pep he’d have to go properly.

It’s on Pep. We can keep beating ourselves up about it but it’s on Pep.

We talk about how well ran the club is, and obviously it is in a lot of aspects, but how we’ve allowed Palmer to leave because the manager spat his dummy out and how we’ve allowed this squad to age to the point we’re not able to keep up with teams anymore is worrying.

At some point someone should have stepped in and said it doesn’t matter if you like a small squad, we’ve got players that are constantly injured and/or over 30 so we need to start to replace them.

That's if you believe what Palmer has said over what Pep has said. There were plenty of ITK (including on here) at the time saying that he was desperate to leave and didn't care about City because he was a rag fan - His interview about only wanting to go out on loan seemed like a deflection to me, to keep the heat off of himself.

At the time it was the correct decision to do what we did (and we could only make that decision on the information available at the time) - we probably should have got more money for him in hindsight (but even the amount we got was decried at the time as OTT by the press). Players move on all the time and his continued success is still a testament to how great our academy is - It looks like an even worse decision now I think as its just been compounded by other mistakes regarding squad imbalance (also we let Mahrez go which wasn't originally in the plan for last summer).

I am concenred that if Foden continues his slump we will regrest it even more.

There’s no difference between what Pep has said and what Palmer has said. They both say that Palmer asked to leave, however Palmer goes further by saying it was on loan. Pep doesn’t specify. Do you think if Palmer was lying Pep would just let him lie and continue to make him look stupid?

At the end of the day we fucked up, you don’t just let players of that potential go without at least trying to persuade them to stay. It’s called management.

Pep is to blame. No sugar coating it. That said Palmer has proved City were wrong to let him go.

Pep has already said if someone wants to go they can go which is piss poor on his side .

I recently persuaded a manager from going elsewhere for more money - running my business successfully is one thing , ensuring good people remain with me is another skill one has to have.
Anyway it’s done - he’s gone and it’s PePs fuckup and he knows it . The key now is not to repeat the mistake.

ifs, buts, maybes...
chelsea's chaos is what allowed palmer to flourish. he is a maverick, no way he could have had the 18 months he's had at any other club.
fair play to him for seizing his chance and showing everyone what a great player he is but it wouldn't have happened if he'd been somewhere with a structured plan.

That’s fair, shows he has the ability to block out the chaos and flourish. Pep should have done better.

If Pep was all about principles then he should have fucked off Walker when he wanted to leave . He went out of his way to keep him so why not with a talent like Palmer?
it's not like Walker is in his 20s.

I'm surprised we haven't addressed our aging squad, poor planning from hierarchy and manager if he had a say. Prepare to be dry bummed now they know we're desperate for reinforcements

That’s a great point re Walker who did everything to cause upset at our club .

The level of chaos in Walkers life whilst playing, I predict will be off the scales when he’s time on his hands!!

Everyone bang on here.

And the walker point is massive. Hes stubborn with some then bends and offers captaincy and new contracts elsewhere. Crazy.

Id have palmer back when pep goes. If only to stop him going to rags.

Ive heard palmer will want back up north

City also made his dad move to prestbury to get away from wythy which he never wanted. Now there in a massive house in an area they dont want to be in and palmer has left.

Imagine someone making you move to Prestbury from Wythenshaw and you not liking it  I can tell they’re scruffy cunts.

The Walker thing is even bigger, to be honest. He was moved as captain just to keep him, even if Kevin is fit, Dias is fit, both mostly, Gundog was back.
Mr Whippy was the captain and it felt right to come back and get the armband, even if he was away, as we all saw what a big voice he was in the dressing room.

Pep has a curious man management, to say the least.
But If would have to chose between Palmer and Pep, I would choose the bald bastard all day long. I love him, even if I want to strangle him 99% of the time.

Interesting this thread, it seems very few were bothered at the time.
I seem to remember the only club in for him was Burnley and he was set to go there until Chelsea made their last minute bid.
Would he have kept Burnley up- would he have been playing Championship football now.
Hindsights a wonderful thing.

Yes Hindsight is a wonderful thing. However Foresight is even better. We fucked up with Palmer, facile to argue otherwise.

None of us watch Palmer everyday in training. None of us have watched him every game at the academy. It’s not up to posters on a forum whether we keep players, it’s down to Pep. The fact people are unwilling to accept he massively fucked up AFTER being afforded the luxury of seeing him everyday in training is baffling

Maybe he wasn't doing it in training. Maybe he's a confidence player and he was overwhelmed by those around him. He had quite a few minutes at the end of the previous season with us and didn't impress.
And i'm not saying we didn't fuck up because we obviously did.I'm giving a reason about why it possibly happened and the fact he was a day off going to Burnley.

He was obviously doing it in training. Pep said that he begged him to stay for 2 years. Pep’s words. If he wasn’t doing it in training why beg him to stay? He told Palmer, “Mahrez has left, you’ll play more”. Why tell him that if he’s not doing it in training.

From Pep’s own mouth -

“If Palmer had the minutes I gave to Phil [Foden] from the beginning, Cole Palmer would be here - but I didn't give them to him. That is my responsibility.”

What Pep says and what he means aren't always the same. He said a lot about McAtee at the start of the season.
Mahrez had gone, we'd signed Doku. We had Oscar Bobb.
Maybe Palmer didn't fancy the competition. He was prepared to go to Burnley.

Walker isn't doing it on the pitch, not very impressive and yet he keeps playing him.
I'm questioning Peps principles, it can't apply for one and another rule for others. It should apply to all or not at all. He's simply being stubborn just like some posters whom refuse to acknowledge it

Didn’t fancy the competition but went to a club with 27364792 players?
