There were rumours today but I suspect they were just that. Someone says something on twitter and suddenly it's true.

However if some hack had some story about his PRIVATE life that he was going to expose, I hope they're feeling proud of themselves.

Hate to speculate on this but I have a feeling that it will turn out to be something to do with his sexuality.

Whatever was wrong it's tragic.

That is the rumour, and apparently the Daily Star were going to out him. IF true, even in the midst of the Leveson inquiry, we need to have a real think about how our press operate.

I wouldn't be surprised if the press are concocting stories that purport to give reasons for Gary Speeds suicide. You'd like to think that, with that inquiry going on, they'd pause and think about the possible harm thay could be doing.

At the moment, we have no idea what darkness drove him, but that isn't going stop the tinpot theorising. They'll go through his bin, hack into his computer, friends and family will be terrorised: not to get at the truth, but to write titillating storieas that we, the great British Public will be expected to lap up.

Absolute tragic this. Top top bloke. Bit celeb in the Chester area and was a member at my gym. We have a kick about a couple of times a week at the gym and for a few weeks Gary used to turn up and play. Fantastic. Soon as people heard he was playing though too many turned up but rounds the guy up, just a normal down to earth fella. Thoughts go out to his family.

Very very sad for his family and friends.

Everyone has respect for the bloke, but still the media makes me want to vomit.

Firstly you have SSN asking all and sundry 'what they think'. WTF do they think they will think? Secondly you have people queueing up to get in the 'respects' action on camera.

+1. Horrible to see so many people acting like the tabloids on this thread. Reminds me of the 'I'm not racist but...' line.

Can we try and not to speculate about the possible reasons. We are better than that. What do the reasons matter anymore anyway? It's all over for him.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Certainly at a time like this it's not uncommon to speculate as to why it happened and there are many reasons to contemplate such, just because the Finnish braintrust hasn't thought of them doesn't mean they don't exist.

It's all over for him but I'm sure his loved ones will want some answers, they must be going through hell right now.

You are right about speculation not being good though, but it's human nature.

I think it's natural to speculate on the passing of such a public figure in these circumstances.

Wanting to understand what drove someone to this doesn't make you any less of a person than those who are content to not know.

Let's look at the situation here. He is a family man. His family say that he wasn't clinically depressed. His family say that there were no marriage problems. He is doing well at his work. So anyone can gather that there is something extremely deep rooted and highly personal behind his decision. He has two young lads. I think everyone should allow them to deal with whatever has happened and they don't need possible reasons spread all over the internet and tabloids.

Inquest opens today
Press will be in full attendance no doubt
We'll know soon enough
and the findings will hopefully be the facts, which means that at least 3 of the theories posted in this thread will be found to be unhelpful gossip
the term Rest in Peace is intended to mean just that

You equate trying to understand why it happened to be the same as rumour mongering over the internet?

You used to come across as a genuinely positive person, when did you become so jaded?

The inquest into his death starts later today so there isn't much chance of the story vanishing from the press any time soon.

On the plus side, his poor family might get some answers that they need.

Me? I have never been "genuinely positive person". Ever. I've been fucking downer since I came out of my mothers womb. Possibly even before that.

But that's beside the point. Point is that they, as family, not only have to deal with his death but will most likely have to deal with something major they didn't know about their father/husband/son. I think it will all be tragic enough even without all the speculation.

Edit. KK:sometimes having to wonder for the rest of their lives is actually better than knowing the truth. Depending on what has happened.

theres bound to be people wondering why it happened its called human nature.
for all we know he could have been diagnosed with a terminal disease,
and kept it from his family, and that could be a reason who knows we might never find out
which wouldnt be a bad thing.
