My opinion hasn't changed. I've had some very unfortunate dealings with depression (not myself) and I don't think I can do this debate justice by keyboard.

I'm not some depression isn't real nazi by any stretch. I just think he stumbled upon a charmed life and has had blues making excuses for him for 5 years, while stealing more money in a week then we make in a year. He's surely got to have somebody in his life that tried to help him at some point.

Surely he was being treated for alcoholism? Is that a mental illness, or is it just going on the piss every day? There are times in my life I've drunk every day, when I was younger especially. There are also times when I've got to play County 'B' squash by sheer application, and football, not drinking. Surely most people have had stages in this and certainly mates that go OTT- you need to pull yourself out of it. Root causes of it are having nothing to do/no interest, the time available and the money to pay for it. He had all, but not the mental drive to get fit and avoid it. I'm pretty sure the injuries were caused by lack of application after other injuries - as suggested by his 'treated for some years'.

Some people can, some people cant, it's all about character.

I agree with some of your post but I think this entire "pulling yourself up by your own boot straps"-thing is overrated, or at least not applicable in every moment of one's life. In my experience, it's often the pulling yourself up part that leads to increased depression and continuation of one's misery. Accepting one's one weakness and just laying low, resting, talking those shit boring long walks and letting oneself take the time to heal is equally useful, depending one the case.

Pulling through depression and mental illness, or alcoholism, as a general method for getting better, does not work.

In fact, trying too much when you're exhausted from depression or whatever psychological illness that you may have, is what slays people. Really.

I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

I hope he can make some sort of comeback, sort his personal issues out and play a bit of football. Never be a prem player but hope he doesn't waste all that talent

Isn't this all rather subjective and assumptive, particularly 'I'm pretty sure the injuries were caused by lack of application after other injuries'. What are you basing all this on, exactly?

One thing I can say with some certainty is that the 2nd bad injury (probably the worst of the two major ones) was unfortunate and nothing to do with a lack of application.MJ had been working very hard to regain his fitness and was with the first team in a regular session and as he was sort of running a ball out for a throw in he took a fairly hefty challenge, maybe just a strong push, which he was not set for and he went over badly on his leg.I could say immediately it was a bad one from his reaction and all those around.

I do hope something comes good for him in his life. I was regular at city when he broke into the team and while they were very optimistic about comparisons with colin bell, the lad looked like he had a very good future. Sadly not to be.

Looking at his face i do wonder if he has maybe been on steroids for his injuries. He has that moon face simular to my dads that is caused by steroids. I dont mean performance enhancing type in a dodgy way. Just a ponder.

Wish you look lad with what ever becomes of your life ahead.

It was Marwood.
So this is how it feels to be City,
This is what it means to stand tall,
This is how it feels when our club has no debt at all.

A good article on BBC sport about MJ. Some interesting insights from Did Hamann.

I'll always remember his goal against Scunthorpe in what turned out to be his last match for us.
