Apparently the ref touched the ball in the build up when Sheffield United lost possession. If that is the case then the goal should have been disallowed.

I dont think thats right. Even if a goal is caused by a deflection off the referee a goal stands. I think they were complaining about obstruction by the referee. Either way tough I think.

If the ball hit the ref the game must stop. It didn't hit the ref

Law changed this season. If the ball strikes the ref then he stops play and restarts with a bounce ball.
