Not city related, but ipswichs goalkeeper whos an irish u21 international has retired not due to injury but because hes fallen out of love with the game, i find it remarkable, i really do! Hed saved a peno in the carling cup last week and was the hero and now hes just finished, i think he could regret it after all recession ireland isnt very pretty for early school leavers with no experience these days.

On one hand though youve got to hand it to him for not just sitting back and takng the money, could of had an easy life for the next 10 years even if he didnt want to bother moving up levels, always room for 2nd choice keepers n the lower leagues!

From what I've read, everytime he's looked like he's going to get a shot at being number 1 at Ipswich they've gone out and brought in another keeper. Shame really.

Well that's bloody strange. Independent article seems to make it out like it was couragous move away from the limelights of football world but the way I see it this actually proves just how far away these youngsters are from the real world. If he'd have some career path or education to fall to then fair enough but I wonder whether he even has done his A-levels. Out there in real world he is nothing but some kiddo who wasted the time others were educating themselves playing football. So what he is looking for here is maybe some cleaning job or flipping burgers in McD, maybe just maybe some day graduating into carrying bricks for bricklayer when he is 40. And that is if he actually gets lucky and gets a job. What I understand about the economic situation in Ireland right now, even those jobs will not be easy to get. Does he think he is going to love that more than playing football?

He will wake up to harsh reality one day and kick himself for what he has done.

funny thing is a new mcdonalds opened up in some part of ireland and they got 700 applications ranging from architects to former bank workers, even that would be hard tog et these days, thats what i find more remarkable. He could of gone home and played in ireland part time got 500e a week and done bugger all!!

Thats extremely judgemental.
He could be like Onuah whos probably more qualified than most people on here and wants to take a different path because he's not some thick little football kiddie and maybe he fancies moving into medicine or architecture or something that he's always wanted to do

It's only bizarre because it is so rare nowadays, kids of his age are just greedy little fuckers so to see someone choose something else other than football when he could have made a good living out of it is, surprising but yet refreshing.

In about 5 years time his mates will ask him if he fancies a game of 5-a-side. He'll say yes, go in net, have a blinder, then think to himself....what the f*** did i do that for 5 years ago!

It's not the end of the world - he will probably have enough money put by to educate himself as a 'mature student' for whatever he wants to have a go at - sports psychology, physiotherapy, maybe coaching. He can still draw on his football experiences to help with a new career.

ffs footballers get lambasted for living the fucking high life these days and you get a kid who decides its not for him, makes an informed decision that has probably cost him many sleepless nights and he's spoilt?

What a stupid thing to say. Maybe he doesn't like football? Beleive it or not, not all footballers play for the love of the game, some are just talented at it.

If i was good at rugby, good enough to play youth level for my country and at a top professional club i wouldn't want to play it for 15+ years.

If you had no interest in the game would you want to sit on the bench travelling the country for 15 years away from your family and friends?

Good luck to him i say.

I played against Suppy at schools level* and he was one of the best keepers I've ever seen in terms of potential. Was always destined for the top and it's such a shame that he's going to pack it in at only 22, but good luck to him with everything when he moves back home.

My money's on him ending up with a League of Ireland club within 2 years.

(* He was in one goal, I was in the other, 0-0 draw. Shit claim to fame I know!)
