Don't remember an awful lot about Corrigan, but don't think there's anyone out there better than Given at the moment - so I'll say Shay.

To be honest I'd have to go for Shay because he has a lot more to deal with as keepers in those days could pick the ball up from back passes.

Got to be Corrigan, he's a City legend and did it over a long time. I think Shay is a legend in the making, and in time might go on to be better but for now its big Joe.

Good point But in them days you were allowed to put the keeper and the ball in the back of the net, Keepers get a lot more protection nowadays. For me Its Big Joe . But Shay is outstanding .

bloody good question !!!!

At the moment, big joe gets my vote

However, depending on how many years Shay plays for us, he has a chance of being our second best goalie of all time (behind Bert who will always be an ultimate City legend)

Shay Given or Big Joe?

Why do you even ask? Is Shay a Legend after 9 months?

Love the title of this thread. For me Joe was a one of my Favs just unlucky Shilton and Clemence were on the scene at the same time. top top keeper!
Reckon Shay is just as good at gathering points though.

If the question is who is the biggest City legend it's very simple and it's Joe. But if you ask me who I would prefer in goal now it would be Shay. ( and don't anyone say that's because Joe is 60+)

Corrigan gets my vote.

But Given really is a fantastic keeper and just to be compared to Corrigan shows how good he is.

Corrigan was waaay before my time, but only noticed how good Given actually is since he joined us. Always thought he was good, but now I really think he is world-class. Buffon, Schmeichel & v/d Sar were better when they were at their 'peak' but can't think of many keepers I'd rather have in goal at the moment tbh. Casillas of course, but apart from him I think Given atm is probably one of the best keepers in the world.

Absolutely no doubt about it. Corrigan was a much better goalkeeper than Given ever will be. He commanded the entire penalty area.

Given is average, I'm afraid. Still freezes and sticks to his goal line. His reaction time is good though.

One point to remember. The football has been radically changed (I refuse to say improved because I think the changes give an unfair advantage to the outfield players and not the goalie). -so perhaps Elano's wunder-schuss against Newcastle made Given look slow when it moved quite a lot in the air.

Not even a question.
Corrigan is a City legend, Shay isn't.
But just on ability alone. . Big Joe commanded the whole penalty area, barging through crowded penalty areas to take anything thrown in. Huge frame made him a difficult man to beat, but still as agile as a cat on speed.
One thing worth remembering is that he was bloody awful at the start. He turned the crowd around in a similar way to Goater. Was pilloried and ridiculed, but became a hero.
City and sniffing knickers.
Come on Blues.

Its hard to believe but I remember big Joe being the butt of the boo boys for a while until he got settled into the team and as CITYSTEVEDON says above he was prone to the odd faux pas. Having said that his longevity alone made him a colossus as well as his size. I think his size alone is an indication of how the modern game has moved on, Joe was 6ft4" and for a long time was the tallest player in the leagues (sure to be corrected if not right) whereas at 6ft4" nowadays you are tall but not huge and can play anywhere on the park.

Anyways, ramble over and I'd take Shay.

Big Joe for me...............possibly in a few years should Given give consistantly inpressive performances he could threaten my view.

I remember standing behind BIG JOE when I was a kid and remember thinking how big he was.He seemed to take up the whole goal.
However now I think Shay is more agile than Joe and can cover his area quicker and a better shot stopper but not as commanding.
For me its Shay
