Blackburn Rovers confirm swine flu cases
The Premier League is facing its first case of swine flu after Blackburn Rovers confirmed two of their players had contracted the illness.
Chris Samba and David Dunn were ruled out of the 5-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, due to what Sam Allardyce described as a virus. However, since then both players have been confirmed as having swine flu.
Despite the outbreak, Blackburn have confirmed their Carling Cup tie against Peterborough United will go ahead on Tuesday despite Allardyce expressing fears that the bug may have been passed on to team-mates who are also feeling the effects.
"Two cases of swine flu are confirmed and other members of the squad and staff have complained of virus-like symptoms," a club spokesman said.
Sam Allardyce, the Blackburn manager, said: "Dunny and Chris Samba have a virus and a couple of the other lads who were playing against Chelsea have that virus or we think they are coming down with it.
"We will hopefully get them back next week when we have to go to Old Trafford. But it is one of those viruses that can see you out for up to six days so we'll have to see."
Most clubs have taken precautions to limit the spread of the bug - with hand washes at their training grounds - but overall national figures suggest a spike in the number of cases.
