Toure and Petrov ruled out of cup tie

Mark Hughes will be forced to ring the changes after ruling out Kolo Toure and Martin Petrov for Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie against Scunthorpe United.

The Bulgarian winger limped out of Sunday's draw with Fulham with a knee problem, while the City skipper landed badly on his already troublesome heel and was replaced late on by Vincent Kompany, who could now be in line for his first start of the season.

Wayne Bridge is also rated as doubtful, and of the trio the Manager said:

"Kolo is not fit, and neither is Martin, while there is a doubt over Wayne and he may well not be involved. Kolo and Martin should hopefully be alright for the weekend, but they are not quite right at the moment.

"They went for scans on Monday and they don't have anything too serious, but Wednesday will be too soon for them.

"Wayne has a little bit of irritation behind the knee. It's something that he has played with for some time, but has dealt with it and played on with it. At times it flares up, so we will have to manage it over the next few days and hopefully it will be OK for the weekend."

Even with these fitness concerns in mind, Hughes intends to name as a strong a side as possible for the visit of Nigel Adkins' Championship side.

"We have gone strong with our team selection in previous rounds and I see no reason to change that," he continued. "The injuries will affect selection of the team, and there be senior players who have not had a great deal of action of late that we might introduce.

"But there will not be a raft of changes, because we want to progress in this competition and it is important that we do."

One player possibly in contention is Roque Santa Cruz, who was could not be named for the Fulham game due to a bout of tonsillitis. The Paraguayan has recovered and may give the Manager another option for Wednesday night.

"Roque trained on Monday and felt a lot better. He'll train again today and if he feels better again then hopefully he will be an option for us."

Even more likely if it's Zabba instead of Micah

Yeah agree with that, be interesting to see how Tevez and RSC bond in that period. With Bellers and Tevez running the channels, RSC is going to have to adopt from his Blackburn days, he won't be used to that level of service (in terms of parting defenders). We'll see how intelligent he is with his movement.

I would rather have them available for the weekend, and not risking them for tomorrow's game.

Kompany in place of Kolo for me and Craig back on the left with MJ or Stevie in the middle.

I think I'd like to see Vlad get his chance in this one.
Apart from who we might get in the FA Cup, this game, on paper, is the easiest we are likely to get all season and if Hughes can't trust him against Scunnie, who can he trust him against?

Time to let Vlad off his leash...I think he'll frighten Scunnie to death.

Swap Jonno for Ireland and SWP for Zabs and I'd agree 100%

Considering he "rested Sean as we had three games in a week" you'd expect him to get at least 45 mins tonight, it would be criminal not to give Vlad a runout though. Would love to see Johnno get a start and Ball get 25 mins or so too. Gotta be Silvinho at LB surely?

Dont wanna rest too many 1st teamers just incase of a cupset!

Be good to have a few rested until Birmingham anyway.

RSC had tonsillitus but trained a bit on Monday and fully on Tuesday so it will be all about whether the illness is 100% gone. I agree though don't rest too many but have the others on the bench.
