qualify for South Africa?
Inherently I do, mainly as I have previously supported them when they have been at a tournament more than for any reasons of family heritage or City players featuring.
But I have to say that I have been increasingly annoyed over the past years by meeting loads of Irish folk who were hell bent on supporting anyone but England.
Plus Trappatoni has (along with Liam Brady) been a proper arse about Stevie Ireland and I kinda hope they don't qualify just to teach them a lesson.
I am torn though.....whaddabout you lot?

I have exactly the same sentiments as you Ant. I was on holiday in Portugal a few years back and it was international week and both England and ROI were playing at different KO times. I had always cheered for ROI as they had players that everyone knew and watched week in week out. However, the abuse from the Irish fans towards the english during the game was crazy, they were spitting venom and were really nasty and it was a nothing game. I changed my opinion from then onwards and dont care if they get through or not.

Seems the Irish fans are begining to regard you like the rest of Europe where the English team and fans arnt liked very much.
It looks unlikely now but I hope they beat the French
Thats one country I've always had a bad time going too.

Why can't you complete the sentence in the title ? It saves me selecting the thread if it's not interesting.
Of course I want Ireland to qualify. Why would we want a potentially dangerous team like France in the competition again ?

As a youth I remember supporting Scotland and Ireland in 94 when we were not there. Unfortunately I have since experienced the venom they feel about us on several occasions. I am ambivalent towards them now.
As a football fan you have to want the best teams at the world cup (except Portugal obviously) So I personally hope that the likes of Ribery, Henry, Benzema and Anelka get the chance to show their skills at the WC.

Two things:
1- Pretty easy to guess what the end of the sentence would be in this case
2- I posted it - interesting is a guarantee ;-)

To put an Irish perspective on this thread, there are a section of our society that still hold negative views on England but I can honestly say that when England are playing in a major tournament most well adjusted people would like to see them do well except obviously when they are playing the Irish. The same applies to the Engish rugby team, when they won the world cup, I remember the atmosphere in the pub was electric and when Jonny Wilkinson converted the drop goal the pub erupted. However, we still remember the last time the England team played at Lansdown road...the fans were a fucking disgrace.

They were not fans mate. . I would qualify my earlier statement by also stating that I do understand where the venom of some of the Irish comes from.
I believe that those scenes were instigated by certain groups with a political agenda (which does not excuse the knuckledraggers for following their lead of course).
The pictures of that Irish kid looking really upset and confused stood next to his dad still make me angry and its 15 years since I saw it on telly.

I always used to support the Irish and other home nations as a kid, but as I've grown up and seen the hatred with which English football in particular is viewed by them all, I've changed my mind a long time ago. I was unfortunate enough to have to be in Scotland the day England lost to Brazil in World Cup. I had to watch it on a hand held tv at Edinburgh airport and then go and take a client on the piss for the day (yeah, tough job!). There must have been a dozen staff wearing Brazil shirts in their factory and hundreds that night out! That would never happen in England with Scotland playing Brazil. We really are the most hated nation on earth. I think North Korean and Somalia are more liked than we are!
I've seen many England rugby internationals and we are the team everyone wants to see beaten no matter who we are playing although in not with the same venon as with football fans. The rugby banter is a lot less intimidating I must say.

I want to see France go through, not because I have any particular affinity to them or dislike towards Ireland, but because come next summer, I prefer to watch more entertaining matches. In 2006 France were in my view the best team to watch in the tournament, while with all respect to Ireland, they are never going to set the world alight with that kind of football. As for eliminating potentially threatening competition, I really don't think England or France can win it this time round, so it's not a concern to me.

thats pretty much it, i like to see england do well(not outright winners tho ;0), i support an english team so it would be hyporitical to all of a sudden be anti english!
As for question in thread, yes i want ireland to win but i want all second seed teams to win to piss platini and the boys off for trying to fix the draw!

PM me on the stuff you want from the hemp shop. If I can get it and it's not illegal, sure.
I'm a none smoker , but I can't imagine you would be wanting one of the'hemp' jumpers that wallies on the slopes wear that are occasionally for sale.
I'm next over for the Chelsea game ( bringing eleven Swiss City fans -- oooh shouldn't say that , they're not from Mancy).
So long as the dogs don't sniff me out at the airport :-))

If Ireland were playing Brazil in the Quarters, semi or even final of a tournament, you bet I'd want them to win. They would be the underdog and our good neighbours. Of course, I'd like to see a good footy match too and as always, the best team wins.

Ive been working in Dublin during two final stages of the world cup and Euros and watched England matches in pubs and never saw anything but almost 100% support for England.

Thats the facts exactly....Ireland is tame in comparison to Scotland, worked up there for four years and in fairness the majority of people wanted England to lose all the time, I didnt really get it, though its maybe to do with the fact that in Ireland, despite having our domestic league of Ireland, we would all tend to follow English teams and in Scotland they dont.
