Matthew Upson - Does City Need This Player?

Postby walmai » Sat Dec 19, 2009 10:28 am

Just thought I'd canvass a few views from you, in light of their being many rumours that club captain and occasional international Matthew Upson appears to be on the move in the forthcoming window.

At first blush, I can see why Hughes might be interested, given the problems you have with Lescott and Toure for the next month. On the other hand, it would be a purchase that few other teams could contemplate (one of those three players would be on the bench from February, pending Lescott and Toure's return to fitness, or to the country from Africa).

There must surely be better targets though?

For me, the deal is done so long as we can make (short term) improvements to our playing squad. We are going to be fighting relegation all season, so I'd actually be quite happy to have a few of your fringe players on loan (Onouha? Petrov? Hell, even Benjani if he promised to score at our rivals' place too!)

But, would the purchase of Upson represent Hughes' last throw of the dice? Upson has not had a distinguished season so far, not at all. His claim will be that the uncertainty at WHUFC has affected his game, but I question whether he can handle pressure easily.

In conclusion, if we can strengthen our team by allowing replacements to be obtained, he can go.

Would you pleased to see him?

The problem I think we have in Toure and Lescott is we have two footballers and zero athletes, we really need a quick physically imposing enforcer and I am not sure Upson falls into this category. I would prefer we went after Per Mertesacker. If you are going after a monster you may as well get a big one.

No Walmai, please tell your management to keep Upson. He's good for three points for us ! I know you guys are struggling right now, but I can't see how Upson can help city at all (except by turning out for whu !).

Fate now demands that he scores the winner against you on the last day of the season.

So long as we qualify for Europe ( poss top 4 ) and it stops you guys from getting relegated. I'll accept that.

Like I said in an earlier thread...I reckon he is the most likely player out of all the speculation to come in

Hughes really rates him

I don't think we need him. I think we need a commanding organiser. Dunne is doing well with the partner he has at teh moment but I still don't think he was vocal enough. The problem is at the moment even when fit neither Toure or Lescott seem to take charge.

Oh would people get over it already??? He obviously wasn't doing it for us and most of us were happy to see the back of him at the time. There are many players better than him so can we please shut up about him already? He is and will never be a top 4 defender and we need to start looking for that.

You want a physically imposing athletic defender? We already have Richards..............

Oh your not happy?

Im sure Hughes can give Blackburn another 20 million for Christopher Samba..............

Be careful what you wish for. Did you watch Bremen vs. Schalke last weekend? Kuranyi was all over Mertesacker and Bremen lost 0:2 .
