New Fitness Coach

Ivan Carminati, an England fitness coach under Sven-Göran Eriksson, will join Mancini’s backroom team.

From the times. How fit were england then?

Also just read on the times that the players marched up to the board to try and persuade khaldoon to keep hughes. This was apparantly led by given. Makes sense because the announcement seemed to drag on.

Here it is...

Mark Hughes' uneasy reign as manager of Manchester City is over.

The Welshman took charge of Saturday's home match against Sunderland knowing it was his last.

Hughes has been replaced by Italian Roberto Mancini.

The end of Hughes' one and a half years at Eastlands became inevitable when news of checks on Guus Hiddink's availability leaked out.

City denied an approach for the Dutchman or any other potential candidate and reiterated their faith in Hughes.

But the Sunday Mirror understands Hughes' fate had been decided and his successor secured.

Hughes position has been under threat ever since City were taken over in the summer of last year and transformed into the richest club in the world.

He has spent lavishly in his quest to take the City into the Champions League, but one win in 10 League matches before yesterday proved broke the owners patience.

Mancini will have the funds to reshape the squad and is expected to use his global stature to bring the very best to City.

The departing manager's farewell speech after his team's 4-3 win over Sunderland sparked a dressing room rebellion.

Shay Given, probably Hughes' best buy for City, led a delegation of stars to tell City executive chairman Garry Cook that they wanted Hughes to stay.

Hughes, 46, waved forlornly to the crowd at the end of the match and headed to the home dressing room.

He told the City stars: "I'm proud of you. You've done a great job for Manchester City. Thanks for all you've done for me.

"This is a fine club, keep fighting for the club."

The players pressed him about what was happening and Hughes replied: "You'll see over the next 24 hours. I can't say any more."

The players realised this was their manager's farewell and Given led a a group to confront Cook.

Hughes' backroom staff of Mark Bowen, Eddie Niedzwiecki, Glyn Hodges and Mark Hitchcock will all have their contracts terminated.

Mancini will bring in new assistants including fitness specialist Ivan Carminati, who worked with England under Sven Goran Eriksson. Brian Kidd will step up from their Academy to work as Mancini's assistant.
