The England cricket team + a couple of thousand Barmies are in South Africa and they held a tournament last year. Not playing in South Africa because of what goes on in Angola or the Congo is a bit like not playing in Scotland because of the situation in Kosovo - Africa's a big place. My brother-in-law worked in Livingstone, Zambia during the height of the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe hoohaa. His biggest danger was from car accidents.

Of course there are mad parts of the continent, but Europe and Europeans can't get too sniffy given what they did to each other in the 20th Century.

Alas, major sporting events are increasingly a target for terrorist violence. To stop holding such events would mean the terrorists win.

No one's saying it's not dangerous if you're in the wrong place but they hold countless sporting events all the time & people have very few problems. I've got mates who lived there for years & loved it. If you go to LA & take the wrong turning from LAX you will have a reasonable chance of getting damaged or killed. So you don't go to that area. Unlikely a team bus will get gunned down though. Same in S.A.

some of you on here are fcuking girls or what ?like carl has said angola isn't like south africa and if i had the money i'd jump at the chance of going to the wc
as for todays trouble they've said the attack happened near the border with that other "friendly country " congo, they had a police escort but it didn't stop the terroists unfortunately ,i'm just wondering if Ghana,Ivory coast & Burkina Faso will play their matches in Cabinda now or if they'll be moved to a "quieter"city

Bloody mess, and obviously not a safe enough country (not continent) to even play a part in the competition. As for S.A. completely different deck of cards, I'm trying to come to terms with a big spend and go for the 3 week qualifiers with a travel company and you know it's going to be good when the prices are so 'take it or leave it'.......... mmmmmm too expensive perhaps.
Anyway it'll be one of the best ever ways and safest to experience S.A with pushing 200,000 englishmen and women joining the party. Same rules apply wherever you go, drop your guard, put yourself at risk then - told you so.

As for Ade, he'll do what the National team decide to do and that's undecided.

Horrible thing what's happened. Feel teerible abvout the driver and the injured staff and players.

At the same time, I get a bit annoyed at people calling it a mickey mouse tournament. I do agree that it probabaly shouldn't be played every year, but of course the African nations should have the right to their own continental cup, just like us and South America. The time of year might be a bit unfortunate for us, but playing football in the middle of the summer in Africa isn't really a good option ...

good to hear/ bad to hear if you know what I mean Douglas. Togo were favourites to finish bottom of their group ( not thatim an afficianado) but it's a shame they may not get a chance to show people what they've got

A terrible thing and my condolences to the casualties and their families.

Bear in mind we've had to experience violence in football before, in other continents, including players being muredered because of their performances on the pitch. Stressing Africa to be one giant, hopeless nation is also nothing new but it is a huge generalization and fucking ignorant.

Martinez I'm sure many on here regret some of their comments this vening about the structure of the continent. However, I'm sure we are united in the hope that Ade and all the Togo players get home as safe as possible, and that if the tournament continues, no incident of a similar nature happens to another participant
