That's a myth mate. Reid always starts well and goes downhill. At the time he was fired we had good players who were playing absolute shite and the football was dire and going downward. The problem in firing him was there was no replacement plan for him.
Joe Royle I reckon, dragged us up from the mire. Keegan had it sort of served up to him with the momentum of a just-relegated side, and then went tits up of course as training descended into a game of keepy-uppy and 3 games of golf!

The Reid sacking was ill timed but I wouldn't want to say he was our best manager! You have to ask how much of his initial success was actually down to his predecessor? On balance I'd have to say Keegan just for the excitement of the football in the promotion season and for then keeping us comfortably up. He certainly raised our sights and we did improve from Royle and he did leave us better than he found us - as indeed did Royle though, he would be a close second.

Erm...it was no myth that he gave us a 5th place finish above United...followed by another 5th...followed by a 9th place finish then got sacked after only a handful of games the following season...

The only manager I feel genuinely well disposed towards in an untainted manner is Joe Royle.
He didn't fail us, dragged us back up (and gave me some pretty enduring memories....Gillingham being the one that shall endure forever but also promotion at Blackburn, signing Goater, falling out with George Weah...giving SWP his debut). Also still quite clearly thinks of us as his club whenever you see him on TV etc.
If I could erase the memory of the final season under Keegan then I would think similarly warmly of him. I still do have amazing memories of the Keegan era.....right up until McManaman's debut vs Villa. It seemed like he would be amazing...hmmm. Nah but the promotion season under Keggy and highlights like our FA Cup run, winning at Ipswich when Eyal scored that screamer...4-3 vs Spurs. Great stuff. But it all went a bit tits up and he left us with a shitty legacy.
Reid's results were good but the football was appalling.

the 2001-2002 season was the best football i have watched city ever play. fair enough it was 2nd tier, but it was more entertaining than any city side i have seen. not as good as the book side of 76 and 77, but just flair in abundance.
benarbia was worth a journey on his own.

Not sure where we'd be without Sir Joe. I'm a football purist & wouldn't want his football style now even if we won the league but I'm not certain many managers could have done what he did for us. We were SHIT but we had the pressure of a top PL team to deal with. He transformed us & I recon would have got us back up again no problem (had he not been sacked).
He's never been back on the pitch or anything to give City fans the chance to show our appreciation. The club should rectify that.

Howard Kendall was the best and I think we could have been right up there had he remained in charge. Reid's relative success was built on the players Kendall brought in but we started dipping when Reid started bringing in his own. Replacing Hendry with Vonk was criminal!
Royle follows closely as he, along with Bernstein, saved our ass - simple as.
Keegan up to the Fowler signing, was great. Fantastic, entertaining, exciting football plus some great purchases in Anelka, Eyal and Ali B. and the development of SWP.

Keegan for winning a derby when i was old enough to enjoy it properly. (was too young really for the 5-1).
The last derby at Maine Road was one of the greatest days of my life.

Bernarbia was a top buy, but I always rated Berkovic above him. The lad was quality and the type of player we were crying out for for years! I remember watching SSN a few years ago and he was on there talking about Celtic or West Ham and the guy asked him which club he loved the most out of those two and he said City because the fans were amazing. Top player and top guy imo.

quite funny actually....I was talking about him here to some locals. Obviously he was Algerian so he's massively well known in North Africa. Was cool to be able to talk about him with people who appreciated how great he was (even tho they fookin hate Algerians!!!)
