Professional foul

Yesterday Utrecht were playing league leaders Twente (ginger twat McLaren's team). We were the better team for 90 minutes but just couldn't score. Then in the last minute of added time, Utrecht were clear through on goal but the player was fouled. The foul started outside the box so we got a free-kick and the Twente twat was sent off. Fair enough you'd think. But what advantage do Utrecht get out of this? If there was still a considerable time to play, we would have the advantage of having an extra player. But now all we had was a free-kick and Twente had to play with ten men for about half a minute. Would it not be fairer to just give the penalty in this instance (even though the foul stated outside the box, it carried on inside the box)?

Never criticise a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes.
That way when you do criticise him you'll be a mile away.
And you'll have his shoes.

It's almost impossible to legislate for every possible situation mate, unless the legislators are also prepared to allow referees to apply common sense as well ....... and they aren't.

The professional foul, in itself, was originally an innovation to stop the cynical - deliberate - 'goal stopping' foul. But because referees aren't allowed any disgression we see players regularly red carded for mistiming (sometimes by a millisecond) a genuine challenge for the ball.
