Carlos Tévez makes point to Gary Neville after firing Manchester City to win over United
Carlos Tévez's limited grasp of English probably ensured that he did not understand most of Gary Neville’s comments and barbed observations during his two-year stint at Manchester United.
Less of the lip son: Carlos Tevez makes his point towards his former team-mates Photo: PA The Argentine understands English in its written form, however, so it would not have taken long to take on board the United captain’s pre-match assertion that Sir Alex Ferguson was right not to break the bank – or the Glazers – to keep Tévez from Man City’s clutches last summer.
Judging by Tévez’s 'quit-talking’ hand gesture towards his former team-mate following his 42nd-minute penalty equaliser in Tuesday night's Carling Cup semi-final first leg win, he knew exactly what the United substitute had said.
Neville, perhaps the embodiment of a Mancunian noisy neighbour, should have known better than to tweak the tiger’s tail by offering his opinion of Tévez in the build-up to such an explosive fixture.
Then again, he was warned by the Football Association for his incendiary celebration of Michael Owen’s injury-time winning goal in the 4-3 win against City in September.
Neville said: “I can’t disagree with his [Ferguson’s] decision on Tévez. He was a good player for us, but if the financial demands are too big, then that’s just the way it goes.”
Never has one player split opinion in Manchester like Tévez. Adored by the Man United fans while wearing red, he is now the subject of a distasteful chant as a result of his defection to the blue half of town.
The legendary 'Welcome to Manchester’ billboard which bore his image last summer enraged Ferguson, but the player liked it so much that he paid £2,000 for a scaled-down version to hang on the wall of his family home in Buenos Aires.
Yet despite his hero to villain status among United supporters, Tévez did not goad the 5,400 visiting fans after scoring in front of them.
He celebrated, but there were no cupped ear gestures (that came later). Even after Wayne Rooney had seemingly attempted to psyche him out prior to the penalty by urging Tévez to 'watch the post’, the City forward kept his response under wraps until well clear of the away end.
He has a growing repertoire of goal celebrations, but then he is scoring quite a few goals in City blue. When he scored against City for United last season, Tévez stopped in front of the directors’ box before standing with his ears-cupped in front of United chief executive David Gill, an apparent dig at the man he perceived to be blocking his permanent deal at the club.
Tévez later denied that this was the reason behind the celebration.
And having put City 2-1 ahead with a near-post header early in the second half, Tévez did it again. It must have been painful for Gill, but Ferguson will not have enjoyed it either, as chants of 'Fergie, sign him up’ rang around Eastlands.
We will perhaps never know what prompted Tévez to swap red for blue.
Did Ferguson really believe he wasn’t worth the £25.5million required to tie Tévez to a five-year deal at Old Trafford, or did the player have his sights set elsewhere months before United finally made their belated move to keep him?
United is Tévez’s past. His future appears brighter at City.

In todays stagnant housing market should john terry "secretly" put houses up for sale?. My advice to him as someone inhabiting the real world would be to let everyone know then youd have a better chance of shifting them, especially as you are short of cash at the moment you no class wanker. Country gent? if he wasnt a rich footballer he'd be kicking peoples heads in outside pissazz on a friday night.

Neville faces FA investigation B*ll*x
The Football Association have confirmed that they will investigate Gary Neville's behaviour during Tuesday's Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Eastlands between Manchester City and Manchester United.
Former United star Carlos Tevez scored both City's goals as Roberto Mancini's team hit back from a goal down to win the tie 2-1.
The Argentina international appeared to gesture towards Neville, who was warming up on the touchline, after scoring his side's equaliser from the penalty spot, with the United veteran responding with what appeared to be a one-finger insult of his own.
The FA confirmed on Wednesday morning that they were 'looking into' the incident, which was caught on camera.
Tevez found the net 34 times in 99 appearances during his two-season loan spell at Old Trafford, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson baulked at the fee he was asked to pay to make the 25-year-old's move permanent last summer and he was eventually snapped up by City. Ryan Giggs had given United a 17th-minute lead at Eastlands but, after Tevez had equalised from the penalty spot, the Argentinian headed home City's dramatic second-half winner.

Neighbours from hell
THE noisy neighbours didn't just turn up the volume - they started to knock down the dividing wall.
And it was with delicious irony that the man who wielded the sledgehammer was the man who snubbed the Reds to join the Blue revolution, the Argentinian who crossed the great divide, Carlos Tevez.
Not only that, El Apache went on the derby warpath after he scored the equaliser with the coolest penalty kick you will see.
Running back to the centre circle, he gave substitute Gary Neville, who was warming up, a yakkety-yak sign to mock the United club captain's words that the Reds had been right to let him go.
Just to rub it in, Tevez scored a second - and that goal mocked Sir Alex Ferguson's claim that Dimitar Berbatov was a better buy.
Passion
That was 17 for the season for Tevez, 10 more than the Bulgarian - while the gap between them in terms of passion and effort is enormous.
Of course, this tie is yet to be settled but perhaps the real winner in the first leg was the Manchester derby itself, back in all its gut-busting, vocal chord-straining glory.
The players entered into the spirit, with a bit of goading and posturing which took us all back 40 years, when Mike Doyle, George Best and the rest were cranking up the rivalry to fever pitch.
And the fans responded. As the blue moon rose, and the City anthem rang around a darkened Eastlands before the game, two red flares lit up the United end.
The two clubs are now as close in terms of competition as they have been since those heady days, when Manchester ruled English football.
That is because the Blues have Sheikh Mansour, while United's American owners the Glazer family are finding life tough.
But the financial gulf between the two can be forgotten as soon as the whistle blows, and so it was.
For a while, Roberto Mancini's inclusion of 19-year-old Dedryck Boyata for only his second appearance looked like a gamble too far.
Boyata was nervy and over-awed, and Valencia escaped the attentions of Craig Bellamy to provide Ryan Giggs with the opening goal.
Mancini had been desperate for a clean sheet, but that was out of the window with just 17 minutes on the clock.
Suddenly it needed something special from City, a herculean effort, a flash of inspiration or a little bit of luck. In the end they got all three.
Spirit
And it was the two men who have typified the Blues' fighting spirit this season who combined to make it happen.
Tevez laid the ball in behind Rafael for Bellamy. The first tug on him was outside the box, as it was with Micah Richards' foul on Louis Saha three days earlier, but the second was enough to be adjudged a penalty.
And, despite United's time-wasting antics, Tevez kept his cool to smash it home with glee.
That signalled a City revival, which peaked when Tevez nodded in Vincent Kompany's hooked cross. After that came the inevitable United onslaught, but the Blues hung on with guts and grit to secure an advantage to take into the second leg.
There is still a long way to go before City fans can truly start dreaming of Wembley, but for eight days at least they hold the bragging rights.
