City Swansong

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

City Swansong

Postby ant london » Sun Jan 24, 2010 10:27 am

Just listening to Peter Beagrie talking about City v Scunny on the radio and I thought initially he was Peter Beardsley....and that got me thinking about Beardo as I'd forgotten his brief sojourn at Maine Road.

But what a fucking player he was in his prime. His partnership with Andy Cole at Newcastle was just something else.....Cole was a great striker but Beardo made him look world, world class.

Anyway, it got me thinking of the players we've had at the end of their career....and who I would have LOVED to have seen in their absolute pomp at City

So here's a selection of them that I can think up.....please add to this and share your views...

Peter Beardsley
Denis Law
Steve McManaman
Stuart Pearce
George Weah
Ali Bernarbia
Danny Mills
David Rocastle
Peter Schmeichel
Robbie Fowler
Andy Cole

Honestly I don't really know who I'd have preferred. I think probably Beardsley or Bernarbia....fuck knows though as there are some amazing players there. Brilliant, epic players

Can't believe you missed Tony Grealish off that list, Ant.

great shout. Had the pleasure of watching him in the flesh a lot at Highbury/The Emirates and he was a beast of a player.

as a football fan, being able to watch that period of Arsenal team (Vieira, Bergkamp, Overmars, Pires, Henry.....too many to mention) was just a fucking delight. Not giving a shit who won or being stressed because I was emotionally invested in the club...just footballing pornography. Brilliant

I bet Beardsley wishes he played for us under different circumstances too - his 6 games for us included a 3-0 away loss vs Reading and home defeats to the mighty Ipswich and Oxford!

Robbie Fowler was brilliant in his day, one of the best goalscorers I've ever seen.
Ali B was brilliant while he was with us and it would have been great if he'd played for us for longer.
And Vieira is a great shout too. Honourable mentions to Stuart Pearce and George Weah as well (even though I've not seen much of Weah he must have been good to get World Player of the Year).

George Weah, Ali Bernarbia, Kazi Deyna, Peter Beardsley and Stuart Pearce are the ones I would most liked to have seen at their peak (preferably together). Sammy McIlroy was past it when we bought him but over rated.

Dave Watson was over 30 but still at his peak.

Don't think Mick Channon counts, he was only 28 when he joined us - as was Derek "The Tank" Kevan.

Ali Benarbia was a great player and could be absolutely quality at times!
He could pick passes out from nowhere and had a great shot on him.

What about huckerby? He was fantastic but could have perhaps been better?

Don't forget Peter Beagrie himself played for us in 1994...he was class in his time too!

One of my closest mates growing up is a stoke fan and Beagrie is to Stoke what Kinky is to us

"Huckerby might have been likened to "a speedboat with no driver" by ITV pundit Andy Townsend last season, but the Manchester City man's pace preoccupies Nationwide defences"
