Which goalkeeper would you rather have??

Postby edge275 » Fri Jan 29, 2010 3:22 pm

Can someone add a Poll to this.

A) Buffon

B) Given

I think the answers would be interesting.

Given. I think Buffon is probably the second best keeper in the world (I prefer Casillas). what worries me, though, is that he's never played outside of Italy. As we found out with Isaksson, a good goalkeeper who doesn't communicate to his defence is a bad goalkeeper. If I had reassurances about his english, I might think differently. But I'm perfectly happy with Shay. I really hope people aren't gonna pin the derby defeat on him coz he's been immense for the past 12 months.

i dont think you can compare isakkson with buffon. the latter has always been one of the worlds best. isakkson was never near that lvel.

For the record Buffon is actually younger than Given.

I haven't said that they were at the same level, but my fundamental point remains the same. Isaksson had 40+ caps for Sweden and a great reputation in France when he came to us aged 24. He lost his place to Nicky weaver because he couldn't talk to his defence and we were shit with him between the posts. My argument is that there's a lot more to goalkeeping than making saves and coming far enough off your line. You have to be able to organise the defence too.

Given.

Buffon's not the goalie he was a few years ago and his form has been pretty hit and miss since he came back from injury.

Shay has saved our arses more times than I can remember since he's been here with world class saves.

Why would we even need to question his place in the team? Because of one goal which can really be blamed on about 4 players not doing their jobs properly?

Given.

Watched Inter vs Juve last night and was highly unimpressed. Given is a far better goalie imo.

I often watch Buffon in the Juve home games and I've no doubt: Shay is actually stronger than him, definitively!!!

I'm I dreaming? People need to take the blue specs off, Given will NEVER be anywhere near the class of Buffon. He has been in the top three goalkeepers in the world consistently for the past ten years. He might not be having the best of seasons this year, but that's because Juve are not in general, and did what we did in hiring somebody to inexperienced for the job.

Shay is not even the best in the Premiership. He is top 5 in the Prem. Van Der Saar is better than Shay, he is just a class above, as is Cech on his day. Reina is also a very good goalkeeper, and dare I say Joe Hart has been very good this season. Let's not over rate Shay now. He has one big flaw and that is he doesn't come off his line. He may have the edge on nearly every in the world for reflex shot stopping, but you need to be excellent all around to be the very best, not just in a few facets of goalkeeping.

Renato is the man.

Given of course. Trapp and Mancini both said they think he's a better keeper and they had a better look than I did.

It'd be much of a muchness though. The goalkeeper isn't the problem. Finding our best back four, getting them playing consistantly and getting to know zonal marking inside out is what we really need, most certainly not a new goalkeeper that has never ventured outside Italy.

Keepers have to deal with a different style in the prem and Given has plenty of experiance. he is just about hitting his peak now as well, I was delighted we signed him and NOTHING has changed that.

I'm glad of Given as well. Buffon is pipe dreams, in reality not one of our starting 11 would be in a world 11. We are not at that level yet, Given is not far off it though, as are a lot of the other players which shows the progress we have made.

I have just noticed Lee Peacock has signed for Grimbsy. Sends shivers down my spine, the gash we used to employ.

Buffon WAS the best goalkeeper since one year ago when he got a lot of little and big injuries.
Shay? I hope he'll stop to make mistakes when he plays at the swamp. Maybe that atmosphere is too heavy for him but I cannot suffer so much everytime rags beat a corner, no more please!

One controversial goal and suddenly the securest guy in the squad isn't good enough. How many threads is this now about one goal from their unmarked dangerman late in the game.

Hardly a word about all the good saves he made.

We're extremely lucky to have a keeper of the quality and ability of Given, plenty of teams have had money down the years and haven't had keepers half as good as him.

Buffon, the keeper we all know is gone. He's not the same since he got injured, he's been with Juve for years. He's won everything he wants to win, if he leaves it will be for money -- insane amounts of money. The hunger won't be there, just the desire for an obscene paycheck and an inflated ego. Given wanted out of Newcastle to have a chance of winning something, he was tired of waiting. He wanted to achieve something while he had the time. You can see how hard he's working for us, how much it means to him.

Given offers so much more. He's not going to get homesick, or fall out with the manager. He wants to win at least as much as anyone else on the team, maybe more. You want a keeper to drive the defence to better things, Shay is that man.
