Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

johnson or petrov ?

Postby adebayor25 » Mon Feb 01, 2010 11:13 pm

now johnson has signed would you either play petrov or johnson ? from what iv seen of him he looks like he could become a brilliant player for city. we all no petrov has got it but half the time he doesnt even try and doesnt help out in defence so johnson would be the one id pick out of the two. what do you lot think ?

I think we have a look at him and decide on performances in matches whilst the gaffer can look at how he works in trianing as well.

I think the opinion that Petrov doesn't try is a myth. I also thought he was our best player against Wolves and Scunthorpe and saying he can't play in 'scrappy' games away from home is an untruth.

I also think that picking one winger ahead of another because one "doesnt help out in defence" is absolutely ludicrous.

Its a tricky one Petrov on his day is fantastic, but like you say he dosn't track back and help out the defence most of the time. Then theres Johnson who works his bollox off for the team tracks back and gets forward, but the only thing with him is will the prem prove to be a bit tough for him personally i dont think it will but only time will tell. But if i had to play one id go for Johnson.

I really dont think its a case of either/or. I'm sure they'll be many games when they're on the pitch together.

and swapping sides as Mancini is wont to do since he won't mind Petrov on the left or right and Johnson on either wing either. Either.

Both players are class.

Both are actually very similar in style of play, both bag goals in play and from set pieces regularly, both can whip in a wicked left foot cross, both have a solid passing game.

However...

Jinky has more pace than Petrov, quicker tricky feet, a greater defensive side to his game and a solid work rate that stays constant across every game.

That said Jinky is prone to making the wrong decisions sometimes, when picking a pass or a cross, typical of a young player. Petrov has greater experience so is less prone to this so is better on this account.

Overall i think Jinky will push hard to get in the team straight away and should on merit from what i've seen, most likely though i expect Bobby to rotate Bellers, Jinky, Petrov and SWP alot on both wings, with all getting alot of game time.

Is this rotation a bad thing?

No way, every team we play is going to be scratching there heads trying to figure out how to play us. So many awesome options, if one doesn't work in a game sub him out, try another.

We truly are blessed with talent these days, Jinky or Petrov, what a fantastic problem to have.

Both Bellamy and Petrov have ongoing knee problems, so a having a rotation option makes sense---looking forward to seeing this lad.

Johnson looks like an excellent player, a real threat down the left wing.

So I expect to see him being ineffective down the right wing very soon.

It's up to Mancini to tell when he has shown enough to get into the starting XI.

How's Johnson's right foot btw? Surely it must be better than Petrov's (though who hasn't?)

Being a sad bastard, I actually fished out a recording of last year's City/Boro game & in spite of all the flicks & pyrotechnics produced by our wide players (SWP Robinho) he was more productive than both (or Downing for that matter) & he was playing on the right. It took a full hour before we actually intercepted one of his passes. He set up nearly all of Boro's attacks by both dropping deep & going wide & looked absolute quality there. Given was the only reason he didn't set up a goal.

Hmm why can't we play em both for now? Petrovs been doing fine on the right for now. I think its more of the the Johnson or Bellamy which I think is a lot harder to choose right now.
