Emmanuel Adebayor has urged his teammates to stop looking at the league table in their bid for a top four slot.

The striker, who returned to domestic action with a spectacular goal in the 2-0 win over Pompey on Sunday, insists that from here to the finishing line is all about what the Blues do and not necessarily the form of other clubs.

A glance at the current standings shows that City have games in hand on those around them in the race for Champions League action next term and Adebayor for one is confident that he and his teammates can break the monopoly of the widely recognised ‘big four’.

“We have to forget what other teams are doing,” he said. “We cannot influence what they do and whether they win or lose unless we are on the pitch with them.

“It is important in this situation not to look at other clubs. What we have to do is look within ourselves and look within our dressing room and take responsibility for our own performances and our own destiny.”

With Patrick Vieira, Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge, and Roque Santa Cruz all due back from injury soon and new signing Adam Johnson added to the mix, Adebayor believes the Blues are as well equipped as anyone to put in a strong finish.

It is a belief bolstered by the knowledge that Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham have all yet to visit the City of Manchester Stadium where the Blues are unbeaten this season and stretching back beyond that to April of last season.

“The key is working hard, enjoying ourselves and staying as relaxed as we can in the situation we find ourselves.

“We are on the brink of the top four now and we need to keep pushing. We have to look to our strengths and play to them and if we do that is every game then of course we can finish in the top four.

“We have some top international players coming back from injury and so long as we don’t get many more new ones then we should be there in the fight to the end and we will not fail through any lack of desire.”

Think we should do them. They look weak without Lennon, Jenas has been playing in CM, Dawson is a donkey, Eidur is a shadow of his former self. I am confident against anyone at COMs.

As Manu points out, we have gone through a pretty significant (and fixture heavy) part of the season robbed of key players (Ade, Lescott, Bridge, Toure, SWP, Ireland, Santa Cruz, Johnson) and have still come through that period sitting nicely in the table.

Whilst the window was understated in terms of what we've done, I am a big believer that fresh faces liven things up and having one old experienced winner and one young, ambitious, talented lad should do us the world of good.

I also, for what it's worth, think that a dressing room/training ground minus one petulant child and one grinning idiot could work to our favour.

Add to that the lads who I think could well have futures at City (Weiss certainly but maybe some of the other loanees also) who are out getting decent first team experience (and/or laying foundations for their careers away from Eastlands) and the two kids who have been involved lately then things, to me, look very positive indeed.

The hopeless optimist in me hasn't ruled out us pushing for 3rd place. A couple of timely injuries in other teams and we are in with a shout

I agree with the rest of your post, but I don't think injuries to other teams are necessary, their fixtures list will be enough for us to push for third if we can do the business as expected against Stoke, etc.
