FIFA Rankings

Postby ant london » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:38 pm

New rankings out today. T'Egypt up to 10th. Second highest ever ranking for an African team (highest being Nigeria's ranking post World Cup USA 1994). Apart from that anomaly the rest of the African team going to the World Cup are the "right" ones with Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana & Algeria ranked (in terms of where they are placed in the FIFA table) 2nd to 6th respectively.

Engerland are 9th which should make for interesting viewing when we take on the Pharoahs one month from today. The only annoying thing about that match will be that Egypt will still be missing the injured Mohamed Aboutrika who is by far and away their best player and who also missed the whole CAN.

Anyway, the rankings are as follows and my questions of "How on earth are they still so high?" apply to Argentina, Greece, Russia and (post Sven) Mexico

Top 20

1- Spain
2- Brazil
3 - Netherlands
4 - Italy
5 - Portugal
6 - Germany
7 - France
8 - Argentina
9 - England
10 - Egypt

11 - Croatia
12 - Greece
13 - Russia
14 - USA
15 - Nigeria
16 - Chile
17 - Mexico
18 - Switzerland
19 - Serbia
20 - [strike]Switzerland[/strike] Cameroon

I will be watching almost all the top ten in June. Saw Egypt last June so feeling quite spoilt. Waiting on opening game (SA v Mexico) as well as England v USA, England group 16 game and final. Should know tomorrow.

how are we only 9th? I would of thought our World Cup Qualifying campaign would of pushed us up to 5th at least.

Yeah, the FIFA rankings were always bang on the mark.... FFS

Ireland have dropped two places. After being in a qualifying group with the world champions and not losing once.... and after getting knocked out by a handball.

Fair enough I'm bitter as fuck about that part of it, but to say that since the last FIFA rankings Ireland have gotten worse is an absolute JOKE.

FIFA is a joke. You gotta hear the crap that goes on with hosting a world cup. It is a farce and they are just like a mafia that lot.

They should change it to how the tennis rankings work, where you defend a certain amount of your points. Say for example, Federed defends 3000 points, he wins the tournament he accumalates 3000 points. Murray defends 1500 points, he wins the tournament he accumalates 3000 points or something along them lines.
