Taking corners

Article in The Guardian on how (poorly) footballers take corner-kicks. David White's version is in there.

Andy Hinchcliffe, a proper corner taker!

I agree though, it is pathetic, bunch of overpaid pansies

Hinchcliffe scored from atleast 1 corner, it was the first goal I saw City score, 2-2 vs Shrewsbury, he scored a penner that day too.

Love to see Barry smack one across goal like Whitey use to, the bloke who wrote the article is right, something different should be tried regularly.

Its basically a free kick and if you can outswing them, it favours the attacker.

b*rton used to drive me mad at corners as he rarely got it past the first defender!

Petrov's delivery for Vinnie's goal on Sunday was one of the best I've seen from City for a while.

On a vaguely related matter, why the fucl does Bellamy take corners?, he is shite at them, rarely getting past the first defender.

yup
and if he'd taken the one at the swamp we may still be in the League Cup

Low and hard corners are usually morre effective than high and slow ones (=easy for both keeper and defenders to deal with). But there's of course also a greater risk of not getting past the first man when opting for a low and hard one.

It drives me mad to see corners so badly wasted but we certainly have improved this year, especially when Lescott plays. He's an old fashioned 'trouble causer' who distracts defenders & even if he doesn't score himself, he creates a problem so someone else may do.

If you look at the goals City used to get from corners in the 60's 70's though it was more a case of the ball played into the danger area & people with great aerial ability leaping into the air & burying it, rather than a fantastic pacey swerving cross. Heading the ball is a dying art & even those who can get their heads to a ball often have no skill, power or direction.

Agree with most, we are MILES better at set pieces this season (offensive and defensive actually...).

We offered zero threat from attacking corners last season...we have scored quite a few this year. Micah seems to have learned to jump and be dangerous once more, Lescott is a real menace, Vinnie's was a cracker last week and that's before you factor in Vieira and Adebayor (who I think is exceptional in guarding the front post delivery when in defence).

Deliveries are largely very good too. Bellamy, Barry and Petrov put in much more dangerous ball than Elano and SWP did last year

Adam Johnson's got a proper dig on him potentially for corners & crosses but has rarely tended to make the most of it so far. If he's willing to work on it I could see him becoming a really nasty corner/free kick taker.
