The Race for Top 4 Thread

Postby Blueboylewis » Sun Feb 07, 2010 4:00 pm

Thought i would create this thread as every weekend or week day or whenever a premier league game is on that involves the race for the fourth spot or maybe third then i will update this first page and put the league table on here so we can keep an eye out for how we are doing for that sacred fourth position.

I am not going to put United or Chelsea in the race for the fourth spot as i cant see them getting any lower than first or second. I think it will be them two in the title race again this season.

Can someone give confirmation this this is the official thread or not?

Yeah, and the way we are playing at the moment I actually fancy our chances against those kind of teams more than against the likes of Hull, Bolton etc.

DROPPED POINTS LEAGUE
Chelsea...dropped 17pts
rags.......dropped 19 pts

Arsenal....dropped 26pts
CITY.......dropped 28 pts
Villa........dropped 31pts
L'Pool......dropped 31 pts
Spurs......dropped 32 pts

Apart from the fact that we lost, the main damage to the City cause was allowing Chelsea and the rags to move another 3pts each further out of reach. It also allowed L'Pool to get within 3pts of us.
We still occupy 4th place and are still within 2pts of Arsenal in 3rd.
The main change of the last 2 weeks is the gap that has opened up between the top2 and the chasing pack.
It seems Arsenal's 2 losses has seen them drop into the chasing pack and made it a race for 3rd and not 4th place.

This race is still wide open.

It is only relatively recently that an elite group of clubs has created such a huge financial gap with the rest that they have totally dominated who wins the trophies.
There was always a group of "big clubs" that dominated but it was easier to break into and the power shifted regularly, leaving the league race more open to be challenged.
A number of factors have come into play this year; The high debt levels of the top 4 clubs has inhibited their progress and the financial gap has closed significantly, allowing the chasing pack to challenge at the top more seriously.
It has also made the top 4 clubs more vulnerable and made it possible for the smaller clubs to get more of those results that were not unusual in the more distant past but considered freak results in more recent times.
The result is that everyone is dropping points regularly and it is a situation we have not seen for some years.
The rags and Chelsea have opened up a small gap but it is not yet insurmountable and we are in a good position in the chasing pack to take full advantage if we can put a sustained run together.
Our big advantage is that we have a large squad that is returning to full fitness and we have no crucially difficult CL games to drain our energy or distract us, as do the those teams above us.
It is in our own hands and it is still possible at the moment for us to push on to the top.

Surely the 'dropped points' league should and deserves to be, in a thread of it's own ... an 'official' one obviously

But that might mean that BBL has to take it over and I would lose it...I'm keeping it unofficial for that reason.
Beware of your official bollox mate....it could be under threat as i type.
