In early 80s me and some of my RL team mates were offered pro contracts.
If you were MOTM and scored you could earn as much as 100 a week so you needed another job and teaching wasn't uncommon. Nothing much changed before RU became officially professional and that's when lads from South Wales started playing the game.

I WAS OFFERED PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT IN SOUTH AFRCIA....BUT YOUR PAY WAS MADE UP OF BONUSES (THE FLAT RATE PAY WAS CRAP)...MORE MONEY FOR A WIN....MORE FOR GOALS SCORED...I WAS ALREADY A GREEDY BASTARD SO THERE WAS FUCKING CHANCE OF ME EVER PASSING THE BALL.

I THINK TODAY YOU GET BONUSES FOR ASSISTS........IN ANY CASE MY PAY WORKING IN THE CASINO WAS MORE SO I STAYED DOING WHAT IM DOING.

REGRETS.I HAVE A FEW BUT ALL IN ALL I DID IT MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

I was talking about RU.

South Wales players had moved to RL for quite a while before the RU transition to professionalism.

RL was about as popular as American Football in South Wales until the Celtic Crusaders was created as a franchise a couple of years back. Instead of relying on local talent like the RU clubs can, they had to bring in loads of Southern Hemisphere players illegally.

little known fact... I played in the first game of rugby league ever staged at St Helens Swansea.
Do you remember the great Terry Holmes conversion to league?

As I was about 3 months old at the time, no.
However, that other snippet I did know.

Sounds like the OP was just unlucky in sitting next to tossers, but that can happen anywhere in the ground.

I agree with him.
I sit in 326, right on the half way line and the view is unequalled anywhere else in the ground. I find the crowd alright when it's full. Unfortunately, during the Keegan/Pearce days it was half empty up there and became very morgue like. Still, it only takes a few to get the younger ones without flasks going.
Used to stand at the back of the Kippax years ago and preferred that to sitting, but what can you do? Guess it's just the way football is nowadays.
i hate being behind the goal. City were almost unique at maine Road in that the noise used to come mainly from one of the long sides which got the rest of the crowd going.

That is a major point mate. We have everybody going on about making the SS ours and shifting the away fans, yet we are one of the very few clubs in history who actually had a main stand as the singing stand. Why don't all those who like to get things going just move around to the bottom 2 tiers of the East Stand, as close to the away fans as possible?

Think about it, others who then move into the SS will most certainly get enough of a buzz from the away fans to get into the swing of it and make the atmosphere even better. It would be good if the club could initiate such a move by promoting a free standing/singing area and possibly name the un-named ES as the New Kippax.

Last night and agst Pompey, the majority of the crowd was flat and so that was the same in the 3rd tier

Spot on im in 136 in north and although shite if south stand actually give it some then the rest of ground follows suit was the same when i was in east stand but putting last 2 games down to getting ko'd from cup as everyone seems down (understandably) and fact we have played shite since.
