Rory Delap's Throw Ins

Just read a match review and this passage stuck out like a manager wearing a team coloured scarf.

Having equalised on Saturday from a trademark Delap throw-in, they utilised that same tactic four times inside the opening 10 minutes.

Twice Delap found Shawcross but the defender headed over and then had an effort cleared by Richards.

The third Delap throw was dealt with by Joleon Lescott and the returning Dean Whitehead shot over from the fourth.

Another Delap delivery was cleared only as far as Whelan but the midfielder shot well over

We lost 3 out of 4 throw ins to their players in the first 10 mins. We are not showing enough strength in defence and we WILL conceded another goal to Delap in the FA Cup if we don't get some steel. Also it annoys the fuck out of me why everyone has to be inside the box to defender. Most times the ball drops to somewhere around the D and we are giving away so free shots at goal from 20 yards out.

Did you know that every Delap throw-in tonight took more than 17 seconds ? He was allowed to wipe the ball dry and then line himself up for every thow in. one throw in even took twenty seconds. That's a lot of wasted time. I wonder if whether Given, when taking a goal kick took the same amount of time in preparation, he might be given a yellow card for time wasting ?

The guy has been doing this for years. I find it more odd that the fact 6 ft 5 players are winning headers against our lacklustre defence stands out for you.

The fact that as a cross it has very little spin? Or just that it's worked a few times and Stoke have got confident about them and really have a go at it?

Yes, trajectory has a lot to do with it. The ball comes with speed and at the right height. It's also easier to "aim" a throw in than a corner (it shouldn't be, since these guys get paid millions to use ther feet, but it is).

Personally I would love someone like Delap in our team, if he could play football as well. Every throw in close to the opponent's box would feel like waking up at Christmas Day.

On a side issue when we play Stoke why do our defenders treat Fuller like he is Jesus and give him the freedom of the pitch?
He is slow and clumsy as fuck,get tight to him.

I always smile when I see Micah try to do a long throw down the line - it is like he wants to emulate Delap - but the ball goes further up than it does long - mind you perhaps it is something that he should practice - he has the muscles for it

I actually think that it would be good to have someone in your team that can do that - but they have to be in the team in the first place on merit

I'm not even taking the piss when I write this, but if a player was to get on the shoulders of another player and stand just infront of the white line while Delap was taking a throw, would this be allowed or would the ref pull them up for it?

Last season they had a set of ball-boys/girls who each had a towel stashed by the part of the stand near where they operated. Like clockwork, if the ball went off for a throw in the oppo's half, said ballboy/girl ran for the towel and gave it a good drying before handing it to Delap.

Lucas Neill, our then captain, turned to her for the towel when we won a throw-in and the crowd started moaning. He persisted until the referee got involved. The ref ordered that the towel should be put out of Delap's reach (it was raining so his shirt wasn't likely to do the job as well).

From that point on, Stoke seemed to diminish in terms of their set pieces. We won too.

Check when you play there. Are they still placing towels strategically for his use?

Well I heard on the radio last night the guy said "....and Delap wipes the ball down again ready for the throw in...." so I assume they're still doing it.
