United and Liverpool to join forces in US protest
Exclusive by Mike Keegan

February 22, 2010

Manchester United and Liverpool fans plan to stun the football world by launching an 'unholy alliance' at Old Trafford next month.

In a move that until recently would have been unthinkable, United supporters and their Anfield rivals are set to put aside years of bitter hostility to launch a joint protest against their respective American owners.

M.E.N. Sport can reveal that talks between key fan groups from each side of the great divide have already taken place.

Plans to stage a joint show of strength at the March 21 game have been discussed but are still being finalised.

Any joint demonstration is expected take place in the ground with protest marches ruled out amid fears fans, unable to ignore the two club's historic differences, would clash.

Supporters of both clubs may be encouraged to join in chants and display banners sympathising with each's cause.

One source described the plans as "ground breaking."

He said: "There have been talks and certain groups from both sides are up for it.

"It just shows what state football in this country is in when two of its biggest rivals are talking about joining together."

How the proposals will be greeted by the majority of fans from both ends of the East Lancs Road is yet to be seen.

United's Green and Gold protest against the Glazer family has won grudging support among Liverpool followers upset with their own US owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Whether or not the majority of both sets of supporters could stomach a coalition - even if it is only for one game - is unclear.

The source added: "It's a massively sensitive issue and whether it will happen at this match, I don't know."

I wonder if Villa fans will join in?
Berbatov wins golden boot, spends following season on the bench while his team loses title on goal difference. Well played, Fergie.

Putting everything aside, it's not fair when bad Owners take control of a Club and run it in to the Ground. We're extremely fortunate with the Sheikh. We could easily be Pompey or Notts County right now.

Mickeys and RAGs holding hands will be a laugh, though.

I agree with you, but there's always the exception that proves the rule.

I think it would be great if aload of City got together and gatecrashed it with fook off banners with things like 'MCFC richest club in the world' and 'We'll buy both of you clubs-we'll burn both of them down' etc.while throwing monopoly money in the air..That would just be bliss lol..

Whilst it is outrageous that somebody can simply borrow hundreds of millions and then let the club pay the interest. It is nevertheless a sorry story of two clubs being greedy and their fans being greedy. Not for success, but for money. Why ?

Well if i was able to buy share in City I most certainly would be looking to keep them and not view the purchase as a financial investment, rather an investment in my pastime/hobby, my club. Of course free market rules affect the situation, but i would have thought that the Football League would look to protect clubs from the gambling casino that is the stock market.

So, my view about owning shares in City would be very long term investment and something I pass on to my children, knowing that the share would not be sold for profit. Unfortunately United and Liverpool fans didn't think that way and cashed in. Even the major shareholders like Edwards screwed the club over by selling out to the highest bidder, rather than the best bidder for uniteds interests.

Serve 'em right i say.

I really don't care if both clubs go into administration , both crooked beyond imagination. How the fat waiter can get away with his bullsch id beyond me , but i digress.

I have to agree with BTAJim, there but for the grace of God go us. Shinawatra could easily have sold to some chancer's that did exactly what Glazer did. That he didn't is shear luck.

Zuricity is wrong, no matter how much you dislike the clubs in question, the clubs didn't get greedy. Their shareholders did and the club is not the shareholders.

Manchester City was not Swales or Lee or Wardle nor is it Mansoor.

No I'm not Guy, check out how much they want for a hospitality ticket. 300 quid for an off-site meal at old trafford cricket ground
and a ' complimentary glass' of champagne thrown in. This for a game that is not even category 'A'. I call that greed mate and that's not the fans deciding the price either.

The club was always expensive for fans even before the Glazers.
