Had a discussion in the pub today about if a ball hits the post or bar is this classed as on target? Does the opta stats count a shot that hits the post an bounces out a shot on target? Any official clarification here would be much appreciated as none of us could agree.

What happens if the ball goes in off the post, surely then the shot cant be classed as off targer, otherwise if it was off target how can it be a goal.
There must be some sort of sub-ruling, that if the ball hits the post and the balls trajectory is not taking towards the goal then the shot is recorded as off target etc....

If it hits the woodwork its off target.
Just like if a shot was heading wide only to take a deflection and go in. Off target and own goal.
The only difference is the woodwork can't credited with the goal, so the goal is given to the striker.

So what do they mean by: "Saved by the post"? I've never worked that one out.

Common sense says it's Off Target. It'd only be On Target if an opposition player (Keeper, Defender) stops the ball from going in.

I'm with all the others in the thread that have said that hitting the woodwork is OFF target, I mean it doesn't count on Fifa as on target when you hit the woodwork so it's got to be right eh ?!
