The Football League signs sponsorship deal

The Football League has agreed a reported £21million sponsorship deal with energy suppliers npower.

The three-year agreement, worth £7million-a-season, will see npower replace Coca-Cola as title sponsors at the end of the current campaign.

The deal includes additional benefits for both parties and Lord Mawhinney is delighted to have secured such an important collaboration in one of his final acts as Football League chairman.

"They are a widely respected company with a strong pedigree in sports sponsorship," he said.

"Their support is a huge boost to our clubs and represents the enhanced reputation of the Football League in the commercial marketplace.

"Like us, npower recognise the extraordinary attachment that Football League clubs have with people living in their local communities. This agreement will provide real benefit to those people."

From next season, the Football League will now be split into the npower Championship, npower League One and npower League Two.

The deal with the Football League expands npower's influence in the game, with the company already signed up as the first official sponsor of England's 2018 World Cup bid.
