Roque steels himself for closing stages

Roque steels himself for closing stages

Postby Mark (Blue Army) » Wed Mar 17, 2010 7:32 pm

When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and that’s the kind of attitude Roque Santa Cruz thinks City are going to need in the closing weeks of the season.

The Paraguayan striker played his part when the Blues fought back from a goal down to earn a valuable point at Sunderland last Sunday.

It’s become a familiar scenario, but with the race for a Champions League getting tighter with every fixture Roque knows that City will need plenty of steely resolve.

He says: “It’s a compliment to the team, we’ve been good in those situations where we have been behind and needed to get back into a game. We’re experienced and tough, mentally, but a lot of it is to because overall the squad has stayed fit. We can cope with what games throw at us until we get the results that we want because we are in good shape, considering the stage of the season we are in.

"But we are going to need to keep that mental strength in the next few weeks. These games coming up are going to be the decisive ones of the season."

Roque came on to replace an injury-hampered Wayne Bridge on Sunday and for him a strong bench will be essential over the closing stages of 2009/10.

“Everybody will need to be ready to get involved at any time,” he adds. “I have not started many games lately but I know how important it is to be prepared and able to contribute as soon as you come on. Most of the squad are fit, and we just need Ade to come back to help strengthen the team even more.

“You have to expect people coming off the bench to make an impact and change the game. I did what I could on Sunday, and of course Adam scored that fantastic goal as a substitute. That’s just what you need from a replacement , the team’s got to stay as strong even when changes are made and that’s what we all have try to do even if we are not starting every game.”

Thoughts have now turned to the trip to Fulham this coming Sunday, and the draw at the Stadium of Light coupled with results elsewhere turn this into a must-win game for the 28-year-old.

“It’s going to be another tough one, but it’s one of those games that we need to win. We can’t allow ourselves any draws any more, we need to go for the win at Fulham,” Roque concludes.

I always think the result of our next game is inversely proportional to the amount of bollocks the players come out beforehand. The more they come out with the crappier the performance and result. Its called the 'Garry Cook Effect' and was first documentated in a Sports Bar in New York.

I know its just PR filler for the OS but a month of silence during which we string together consecutive wins culminating in the entire squad doing a 'told you we could do it you doubting bastards' dance would be nice. The video of this would look good on the OS and be a sensation on YouTube.

agreed Bobski, it just makes it even more cringeworthy when we lose to footballing luminaries such as Hull.

Shut it Rocky..........try and actually put the ball into the net when you only have the keeper to beat....do that and we actually might just make that 4th spot.

I wish these players would just stop with all the "we can do it" speeches......any more 45 minutes of the drivel served up and we wont get 6th spot let alone 4th.
THEY SAY SWEARING IS DUE TO A LIMITED VOCABULARY. I KNOW THOUSANDS OF WORDS, BUT I STILL PREFER "FUCK OFF" TO "GO AWAY"

As much as I like (by that I mean don't hate) Santa Cruz, the above is the last phrase I'd use to start an article on him.

I like the bit where he says we have an almost fully fit squad does that mean he is injured again.

i'd imagine he starts the next match and gets injured within the first 20 mins.

i can hardly take anything he says seriously. he has zero credibility with me. who's the marketing genius that thought this limp-dick ought to be getting the team amped up via the press? strange.

cheers

He missed a couple but his overall game was good. He will notch a few as Daz says.

Can't quite understand this slagging players off for talking up City.

Dont people understand that in a small country like Paraguay a Premier League player is big news. The press need to speak to them and he replies. They put it in the Paraguay papers and someone translates it to the Sun or whatever. Then someone pastes it on here and the ritual begins.

It's not that the player goes down to Oxford Road and makes a speech on a soap box is it?

More shirt sales in Paraguay I say! Hmm :)
