'City'

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

'City'

Postby King Kev » Sun Mar 21, 2010 11:13 am

I quite like the fact that, more and more often over the last few months, the media are referring to our club simply as 'City'.

It must piss off fans of other clubs called City too!

Very true, at the start of the Hull match the commentator apologised for calling us City, as they had every right to be called City as well - 'just not today'.

Most other clubs generally drop the city, as they are the only club with the name i.e. Hull or Stoke. The only other place i can think of would be Bristol, where there fans may see themselves as just city or rovers.

To the general public though, if you say city, people will think of us, in the same way people will think of the rags if you just say united. Just need to stop them just saying manchester in european games

To be honest they seem to have stopped saying manchester all the time this side of the golbe (although it still happens now and again) in reference to the scum...we are always called "El City" here...in reality it,s quite normal to describe any team starting with the word "El"
THEY SAY SWEARING IS DUE TO A LIMITED VOCABULARY. I KNOW THOUSANDS OF WORDS, BUT I STILL PREFER "FUCK OFF" TO "GO AWAY"

Good point KK. It's the way I remember it. It's our many years of mediocrity that have caused it to lapse I'm afraid. When I was a kid the nicknames to the man in the street were City and United, not citizens, red devils, all that nonsense. As someone said the likes of Hull and Stoke have town names to go by.

There was nothing more annoying than commentators saying MAN City all the time during a match, but now they're getting the hang of it again.

As for the 'Manchester' business abroad as Carl says we are often 'El City', which is sort of cute. And yet I have heard us referred to as 'Manchester' in an interview in which we were the subject. Latino lingos often refer to the City of the club they are talking about at the time. It doesn't mean any offence it's just a different way of speaking when the subject of the sentence is already clear, and we shouldn't get so wound up about it.
