Why do we make our love for City....

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Why do we make our love for City....

Postby london blue 2 » Wed May 05, 2010 10:19 pm

...take priority over our everyday life?

Our family will/are always there for us, yet we continue to find excuses to put 'City' before our day to day 'shit'.

I do it, I know you do it, But why...?

They really are id fuck work off just to get to a game and if i got sacked , id just say well least i got to the game.

It's hard to put your finger on how it becomes such a pivotal part of your life. I was only thinking at tonight's game with my heart doing summersaults how bad City must be for everyone's health. I'm dreading going in work tomorrow because I know the torrent of abuse and I'm gonna get - not sure what to come back with at the minute either. Was Shankly right when he said his famous quote ".. Football's not a matter of life and death ... it's more important than that"? Just maybe.
"..The object of playing any game is for enjoyment. If you have enjoyed it and done your best you have won no matter what the result." - Joe Mercer OBE

But my patience is wearing very fuckin thin now. My priorities have changed over the years and the stress leading up to this game will make me take stock of how much time i will give to City in the future. I know we MAY be on the cusp of greatness but my nerves & patience are shot to fuck. I'm becoming an angry old man when it comes to City and i don't like it. I'd rather go and watch my daughter ride her horse in trials than put myself out to watch City in a pub again. I have been going to the match less & less over the years, and i don't know whether this is a knee-jerk reaction or not, but i'm disolusioned with football at the moment and can live without it for a while.

Fish
Have read loads of your posts in the short time I have been using this forum and I have to say every one of them has made for good reading. But this one is one of the best I have read because I feel exactly the same and i am absolutely gutted tonight being surrounded by moron spurs fans and plastic rags. Dont loose heart mate i had a time in the eighties when I was so busy I could'nt follow City as much as I wanted to , but they were always there and they always will be , go and watch your daughter on her horse trials she will love you being there put City on the back burner for a little while, what ever you do City will always be there dont loose the faith mate . OUR DAY WILL COME BELIEVE ME.

agree one hundred percent...all the money and promises have just made me worse to the point I almost wish for the days when i would sit and enjoy a hard fought win over any average team and go loopy if we beat anyone from the top ten

I can be the same, though I know it's not healthy. My first City match was the 1955 FA Cup Final as a little kid which I watched on a 13 inch black & white telly in the house of the only person in our street who had TV. Started going to Maine Road soon after, so when City had the Mercer- Allison team I was able to enjoy the glory years in my carefree prime, so to speak. I missed the 4-3 title game at Newcastle in 1968 (42 years ago next week, fuck!) but got to Vienna for the ECWC final. The 70's League Cup wins and the feeling of being 2-1 up in the '81 Cup Final replay came and went, since when the greatest pleasure I've had following City came more from individual players who became favorites (Paul Lake, Uwe Rosler, Ali Benarbia, the Goat) than from any conviction that City were again on the verge of greatness. So City's various ups & downs and false dawns as a team these past 20-odd years could be taken with a pinch of salt when set against life's larger joys and tragedies. Until this season. This year I sensed something truly wonderful being built and at the same time I understood that City have held my affections longer than any living person. They've outlasted family, friends, jobs, cats, dogs; the first wife is on another continent and the second sometimes on another planet, and 2009 to 2010 has been a rough old time in all sorts of ways. So, oddly, City have started to matter a bit more, and when the prospect of Cup glory was denied (twice) I felt certain of 4th place & Champions league next season. Which is why I'm feeling so flat right now. After I came home tonight I picked up a book of football supporters' stories called "My Favourite Year" and there's one by a Raith Rovers (!) fan describing how they felt when they won promotion in 1990-something. It's how I still feel about City after all these years. The crowd was singing a song, he says, "one that dared to express what this improbably requited passion felt like. By the second verse more & more scarves were being held aloft as the song spread and gathered us in:
Take my hand,
Take my whole life too,
For I can't help
Falling in love with you."

I enjoyed reading that Bobby....Thanks.
I have often wondered why we get so hyped up about 11 overpaid blokes knocking a bag of wind about. And why when that bag of wind goes into a goal do I feel so fucking awesomely great. Why have I allowed myself to be shot to paradise one minute and dashed to the ground the next by an private company who doesn't even know I exist? Why am I happy to sit here day after day and post my views and opinions on it all?
D'yer know, I haven't a fucking clue...but I know for certain I'll be back tomorrow on here and I will be ecstatic or depressed next year and it will all be dependant on where that little bag of wind ends up....IT IS MADNESS!!!

BUT I WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.

This was a pretty good thread as started by London and Fish until Fonz what's his name buggered it up.
As for you, John, I think i might have been in your taxi myself once, coming away from Manchester airport. But it's nearly 4 in the morning over there so you should be in the land of nod not on this bloody forum.
