1971-72...21...10...7....73pts....4th
1967-68...22...6...10....72pts....CHAMPIONS
1936-37...19...12...7....69pts....CHAMPIONS
1976-77...19...12...7....69pts....RUNNERS UP
1920-21...21...5...12....68pts....RUNNERS UP
1977-78...19...10...9....67pts....4th
2009-10...18...12...7....66pts....5th....(One game still left to play)
1957-58...20...6...12....66pts....5th
I took every season since our foundation that had more than 38 games. I recalculated the records for those seasons at 3pts for a win and in every season that had more than 38 games, I limited the record at the point of 38 games played.
With one game to still be played this season, it could be reasonably argued that despite Hughes and Mancini being shite and despite all the shortcomings of players who have been told to fuck off and called cunts on here, despite all those players who are lazy, couldn't give a fuck or are just playing for the money...This team of no hopers, led by the clueless and stupid, who have no football tactical sense, should we win on saturday at West Ham...could actually be considered to be the 3rd BEST EVER TEAM PRODUCED BY CITY IN ALL OUR LONG AND ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY.
In between some of you slashing your wrists, contemplating suicide or phoning the Samaritans, take a little time to check out those figures and consider just how fucking lucky you have been to be able watch that shite City have prodused this season.
NOT ONLY ONLY IS THE FUTURE BRIGHT AND SKY BLUE...SO IS THE PRESENT...
Maybe some should apologise to the club, the management and the players for their rantings, maybe some should re-adjust their thinking and maybe some should put away the tissues and FUCKING CELEBRATE.

Wow.
That is yet another amazing work of research. It will be the best points tally in my life and I'm 31.

Theoretically it could be just speaking volumes on our long and illustrious history.

SHAY GIVEN: Stays on his line and is hopeless with crosses. ZABALETA: A liability when he lunges in and can't cross a ball. TOURE: Too slow. BRIDGE: Can't defend. NDJ: unable to pass forward. Barry: been out of form for weeks, SWP: Not the player he was and can't get past his defender, JOHNSON: Unable to last a full match, VIEIRA: To old and too slow, ADEBAYOUR: Lazy and doesn't give a fuck. TEVEV: Plays too deep....and I haven't even mentioned the useless crew of ireland or RSC...feel free to add your opwn to the list
WELL THEY HAVEN'T HALF DONE FUCKING WELL FOR BUNCH OF MISFITS....Considering they have been coached by a clueless rag and a bloke who is too negative and not a significant improvement.

John, whilst I fully appreciate the sentiments of your post I think the reason why we won it before with similar points we have now is because the league was much more competitive back then. Maybe as many as 10 teams could go for the league title. Imagine a top 10 in this league all taking points off each other.
We've got to focus on what's needed to be done in today's league.

Edge,
In any season, City can only ever compete with what is put in front of them on the pitch. If you are saying that this season the Prem is less competetive than consider that up until quite late in the season there were as many as Chelsea, the rags, Arsenal, City, Villa, Spurs, Liverpool and Birmingham...with Everton making a late show of form. This season has been the most competetive we have had for years.
Historically, there always were the bigger clubs and smaller clubs so apart from the recent elite group, nothing much has changed mate.
Oh...and didn't that useless cunt Dunnie make the Prem team?...:-)

Next season will be even more competitive mate. You've got The rags, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal as normal. Tottenham who despite Andy Gray's thoughts on the matter are a wealthy club in addition to the bonus of CL money will be able to strengthen considerably. As much as I hate the cunt twitchy is a good manager as well.
I genuinely believe Everton will be a force to be reckoned with next year. The 2nd part of the season puts them 2nd in the league form wise and they had horrendous injuries at the beginning of the season in some occasions as many as 11 players out.
Although not for the next season but in a few years time I reckon Newcastle will get up there again. I know they are always thought of as a joke club but some people thought the same about us until ADUG took over. They have 50k fans every week and now with the PL money and maybe a new owner we eventually might see them up there again. it was only 6 years ago they were in the exact same league position as we are now.
It's going to get interesting.
And yes that useless cunt Dunne made the PL team...I don't know how though ;)
*Edit* I also forgot Villa. Those cunts could overtake us yet!

What happens next season wil happen mate and there's nowt we can do to stop it.
All we can do is keep improving and stregthening weakness and then go out annd compete,
Football has always been competetive, that is the nature of the game and we haave to rise to the challenge. I enjoy the fact that it is going to be competetive and edgy...it adds a spark to the season.
My point is that there has been a season long wailing and gnashing of teeth by quite a number of city fans. Very quick to slag us off as rubbish and run players into the ground.
The actual record shows that we have done quite well.

Great stats, but as Edge suggests, 70 points is nowhere near enough to win the league anymore. So it should not be regarded as the third best team ever.

That is not the point Myagi san, it wasn't meant to be a definitive appraisal.
But there is quite enough in those figures to show that the team we have been watching are up there (somewhere) with the best that City have ever produced. That could not be achieved with idiots leading us and crap playing for us.
I agree that we have some way to go in this modern era to catch the elite but this would show that we have improved immeasurably.
That should be celebrated and acknowledged and not belittled by insults.

Great posts, John. You are the voice of reason.
Now can you make me feel more optimistic about the rugby league team we both support? ;)

John, people have the right to complain about the team, the level of performance from the players and the management.
Now of course they're wrong to do so, but they still have that right. I find it's best to let 'em moan and just get on with your own thing.

John, you could take the total points from any season and divide it by the number of league games played to get those points, (after converting to 3 points for a win) and get the number of points per game. Then put those in order. Maybe im too tired to think straight but wouldnt that also be interesting!?

John,
When I read your second post "Shay Given ... RSC" I thought at first it was someone replying to you rather than your own send-up of the moaners, because they're all actually fair criticisms of the overpaid superstars who have (temporarily?) joined the team we wish we were good enough to play for. Still, the numbers in the post you started this thread with are impressive and should make anyone think, anyone who can, anyway. So maybe it's the money that players get that's the issue here - it puts a gulf between team and supporters that's a lot wider than in the past and leads to people slagging off today's guys much more angrily than they'd have ever had a go at, say, Tony Coleman on a bad day. Rich and mercenary they may be, but they're being paid out of the Sheikh's pockets and now he's a City fan, doing on a bigger scale what I always said i'd do if I won the lottery. That's a good enough reason to be more cheerful than at any time since the penalty that put City 2-1 up in the 1981 replay. City will buy their way to success and I'll enjoy it, and if they do it with the kind of attractive football they've usually been famous for I'll enjoy it even more. They're only an Ali Benarbia away.

Blue In North London,
I regret that even my powers of positivism and optimism are unable to help poor Salford Mate...I wish...
LookMum,
You are right that everyone has a right to complain and I don't suggest that everything at CoMS is rosie. There are many things that we need to improve and strengthen. Debate and discussion are always healthy as are the variety of opinions. I even accept that the emotion of it all will cause people to chuck the odd tantrum.
What I do disagree with is the manner in which some have simply abused and insulted the club, its management and players without good reason. To call a hard working player a cunt and to fuck off is really beyond the pale. The figures (though not definitive) do show that we have a very good side that is not that far away. It needs improving but not demolishing and it certainly doesn't need to be abused nor insulted by those purporting to be supporters of it.
Crossie,
I should really tell you to piss off...:-)
I spent a good part of the afternoon digging that lot out and working it all out. I am sure your method would be possibly more interesting and probably more accurate too...As my old teacher used to say when faced with a task he wasn't prepared to do himself... "Crossie you can do that for your homework". Yes, you are right of course mate.

Bobby,
I genuinely think that it is the money + the culture we live in + the media hype that has defined money as the sole factor behind success. We live in a society that demands immediacy of results, instant gratification and woe betide anyone who fails to deliver it.
The media have helped create an environment of sensationalism, the overuse of superlatives and a climate where instant success is all that matters and anyone who is perceived to have failed in that respect is butchered and sacrificed. So much so that this has become almost the norm.
There is an oversimplification that money equates with success, without regard for any other factors. There is no room for development or allowance for mistakes that can be rectified. Mistakes have to be punished,
We all know that money buys better players and with it improvement. It does build better teams but if you want to compete at the very top, then history shows that it takes time. It is easy to buy your way above the likes of Brum and Sunderland but to overtake established top sides who themselves have been built by heavy investment over a number of years with a stable policy of evolvement, then more is needed.
Mistakes will be made and the advantage that we have is that we can afford financially to rectify them. The likes of Brum are stuck with their errors. There is a fine line between success and failure at the top as we have found this season in the Spurs game and the CC semi final. It will take time to attract the better quality of player and it will only happen when they become available,
It is a longterm hard slog and our competitors are also trying to improve as we chase them. This season we fell short, but not by much and certainly not by as much as some of the abuse on here would convey.
