Steve McClaren named Wolfsburg manager

Former England boss Steve McClaren has signed a two-year deal as manager of German side Wolfsburg.

McClaren had been in charge at Dutch side FC Twente, who he led to a first league title in their 45-year history.

The 49-year-old was sacked as England manager in 2007 after failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

But the former Middlesbrough boss rebuilt his career over two years in the Netherlands and will now take charge of the 2009 German champions.

"I have had two fantastic years at FC Twente, but made a promise to my wife and children [who remained in England] that I would not spend more than two years living away from them," said McClaren, who becomes the first Englishman to manage a Bundesliga club.

"Now we will all live together in Germany."

Wolfsburg were knocked out of the Europa League in the quarter-final stage this season after a 3-1 aggregate defeat by Fulham.

And the German side, who were deposed as champions by Bayern Munich, finished eighth in the Bundesliga.

McClaren started his managerial career at Middlesbrough in 2001 after serving as assistant to Jim Smith at Derby and then Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, where he was part of the club's treble in 1999.

Under McClaren, Middlesbrough won the Carling Cup in 2004, recorded their highest Premier League finish of seventh and reached the 2006 Uefa Cup final.

The Yorkshireman's last game in charge of Boro was a 4-0 defeat by Sevilla in Eindhoven in the Uefa Cup final before the Football Association appointed him as Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor in August 2006.

can't wait to hear the laughable German accent in a couple of weeks!

Fair play to him though, he's proper rebuilt his career. Good luck to the guy.

He could go on to take over at the swamp imo. I've a feeling he'd suit them as Bacons successor.

Apart from the England debarcle you can't really knock Steven McClaren, seems to have done well where ever he has gone. If he does well in the German league can see him getting a job at a decent EPL team.

Fair play to him for having the balls to go into Europe to manage when so many other English managers are quite happy to sit on the managerial merry go round of premier league and championship clubs.

I said before but it wouldn't surprise me if in a few years time he's managing one of the top teams in Spain or Italy

He's done well, absolutely no knocking him for the job he did at FC Twente, good move into a bigger pond and should do quite well again. As long as he stays the fuck away from the England job and City I will be happy.

Agree, some years ago Roy Hodgson got a rough deal in the press and if i'm not mistaken , even on this forum, by some fans.
It certainly never does anybody any harm to broaden their horizons.

It was quite clear that McClaren had been stitched up in England . So now he's getting smaller titles under his belt ( if you can call the Dutch championship small ! But you know what I mean). I'm quite sure that in three or four years time he will be ready to come back to the EPL.

By the way, Hodgson can speak fluently enough in several languages, German, French and Italian. Fluent enough to get his ideas over, his passion and emotion before a game to some of those foreign players in their own language, for them to understand. Those who might not realise the significance of a particular team.

It will help McClaren too to pick up some german and he must have mastered a little bit of the dutch dialect whilst there .
We've all seen his youtube impersonation of Rudi Carrell.

Well done him for going abroad as everyone else has noted.

What I dont get is his exuse for leaving. If he promised his family he wouldnt be apart for two years. Why couldnt they have come to Holland if they are happy to move to Germany?
