I can't understand why people thought he'd be going. He just wasn't getting starts cause all our wingers were fit but that will rarely be case next season. And still he came off the bench in almost every game.

Quality player that loads of people seem to underestimate imo.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

thought he was a cert to go, but with the new 5 homegrowners rule coming in we need to keep a player of his quality - same has to be said of Ireland to be fair
and onuah, but he's for the door

I'm disappointed if this is the case I think we should sell him to the highest bidder.

He has 2 years left on his current deal which pays him £60k per week, and has largely spent this season playing like a fat horse.

His step-dad, who really should take his face for a $hit more often, has run his mouth off in the press about us and yet he's getting a new contract? The worlds gone bloody mad.

Gotta agree, should've waited another season before making him an offer (or not) imo.

Agreed, but in the scheme of things what is £10-20k more to keep him happy as depth? If we truly want to claim silverware in the PL, EL, and domestic cups it is going to take a larger squad, and SWP is perfect cover for the prem games, and a starting 11 member in the others (Europa in early rounds for sure).

He'll be one of Bobby's four 'club grown' then.

We did that before. Chelsea in 2005?

a) He helps meet the English quota
b) He's a Senior Member of the Squad with the combined length of time he's been at City
c) He's not going to start every week at the moment - but what an option for the Bench

We might still sell him, the longer he has to run on his contract the more money we can demand for him

There is no need to offer him a new contract. We should at least wait until next summer after he has proved he deserves a place in the squad.

He shouldnt be rewarded for a shit season!

I think we should wait till he’s cut from the England world cup squad to offer him his new deal.

Kill a bit of bad news with good news and it will come at a point where he realises where he is in the grand scheme of things.

breathe and repeat.

Sweep is a workhorse that actually carries the ball forward. Sometimes he is successful, sometimes not. But he has a go and his teammates and manager respect that.

Definitely a player we should keep.

Dev would be rightly insulted by that comment.

I am more towards the Edge side on this - depending on how it is handled.

We heard a lot about how we were not going to be mugged in the T/F market - and a year later it is taken for granted that we will pay a premium and our pursuit of Lescott and RSC are the benchmarks when clubs look to agree prices for their players.

We also heard how we were going to have some structure / control over the wages - to ensure that the top players were rewarded accordingly - but that we were not having to up all players wages.

SWP signed for £60kpw relatively recently on a contract until he is 30 - and was happy to do so

His performances mark him out to be a good squad player - certainly not a starter - any increase should performance related

What message does it send to others if we cave in to any demands? - especially how they have been handled (I would go the opposite way after his step dads comments just to make the point)

To be right - needs to be a 1 year increase and modest salary raise only

Shaun Wright-Phillips is still an integral part of Manchester City yet it's his remit that has changed. The days of Keegan sticking him on the right wing and ordering the Players to give the ball to Shaun at every available opportunity are thankfully long gone. He was the Star back then and he no longer is. One of many stars, now.

He must stay unless he genuinely wants to leave. City can offer him more than Villa can.
