It seems the rumours of us signing him simply wont go away. Given Liverpool financial postion and the lack of clubs who can pay the asking fee it makes sense that if he wants to leave Liverpool we will be the team he joins.
I think we can safely say we dodged one hell of a bullet when John Terry didn’t sign for us last season. Bridgegate aside he was poor on the pitch, rarely fully fit and at the World Cup shown up as a defender who was past his prime and found lacking of any sort of pace once he didn’t have another centre half beside him to do all the leg work. Argueably still a better player than any of our current centre halfs but in 2/3 years time I reckon both Kompany and Lescott will be better players than Terry will be at 33/34. I remember Hughes saying that signing the England captain in a world cup year was about a statement of intent. Even writing this out I am counting my blessings!
I cant help feel this time next year if we don’t sign Torres we will feel the same way. It’s not just his obvious injury concerns but his attitude in general. It was common knowledge he had decided to leave Liverpool if Benitez was still the manager. A fellow countryman who signed him and he couldn’t even give him one bad season. It’s also common knowledge that he all but packed up at the end of the season to save himself for the world cup whilst Liverpool still had a chance of a cup.
I was listening to the Guardian podcast after the semi final where he was rightfully dropped for being out of form. Sid Low who covers Spanish football for them had mentioned that Torres did not warm up before the game or with the subs during the game. Didn’t receive to much attention in any other press but I noticed on my twitter feed that quite a lot of journo’s pointed out that Torres did not the even bother warming up with the team before the game or at half time with the other subs. He come’s onto the pitch at a world cup final and pulls his hamstring. Spain had used all there subs and what had happened if he had been put on earlier and his side were down to 10 men because he thought he was to good to be a sub and pulled a strop. This is one of the great international sides of all time packed with star talent and he cant even be bothered to warm up and made a tit of himself on the grandest stage of them all.
We are talking $50-$60M plus wages for this guy and I just don’t see him worth being worth the risk. People may say we have all the money in the world so what’s the risk but we cant be seen as a place people come to pick up wages and not give a return. He’s not the only striker out there that can bang in 30 + goals a season in average league.
