Nigel DeJong - a disgrace to football.

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Nigel DeJong - a disgrace to football.

Postby petrov » Mon Jul 12, 2010 12:37 pm

Never have my opinions of one player changed so much in a month, never. I was always willing to forgive his lack of tech ability for the shift he puts in and the fact he gives 100% but at the WC I was a whole new side of him. A dirty, dangerous disgrace of a player who should of bein charged with assault in this tournament. I really hope its Toure and Barry in midfield next year (can't believe i said Barry) but I don't think I can ever get behind him again. A complete and utter wanker of Keane like proportions

Now, I'm not biggest De Jong fan out there as he offers absolutely nothing going forward and lacks passing ability. However, he is a profile player. His duty is to kick the shit out of opposition playmakers and that's exactly what he did in the competition. He did what he was asked to do and did it well. I think it's slightly ot to call him "disgrace" for that.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Your either

a) Related to Xabi Alonso (unlikely)
b) A Daily Mail Reader (possible)
c) On a wind-up (highly likely)

has this not been adequately covered in at least two other threads?

in any case, the Daily Mail, The Sun and The Daily Star are looking for talented and sensationalist writers...maybe you have missed your calling??

But on topic, yes last night was a nasty horrible challenge but I fail to see what else he did that was spectacularly disgraceful for the rest of the tournament

Maybe you just didn't like him in the first place and this is a nice excuse to express those feelings???

Now De Jongs tackle might have been over the top

But this post is by definition just as guilty

De Jong is an asset to City...he wasn't named 'pitbull' for nothing

What a load of shit!

He's one of the best defensive midfielders in world football and your turning against him because he put in a dangerous tackle in the biggest game of his life!

Im all for a good ball winning midfielder mate, but trying to kick someone in the head is not doing his job, deliberately goin in over the top on challenges to hurt people is not the job of a good ball winning midfielder either, look at Makelele who was a legend in the role. Never intentionally hurt anyone, a true pro and a great player. De Jong was disgusting last night, he had no interest in good hard solid and fair tackles, he simply decided Im gonna try and injure someone. I'd call that Keane like and imho football has no place for those kind of thugs. The same could be said for alot of the dutch team but DeJong is supposed a city player and the only one I care about.

Got to agree with this. I have seen far worse challenges that have left players with broken legs. Yes its high and clumsy but we cant agree with him being a disgrace to football. Its a mistake, players make them all the time lets not go over board. Its for instance not on par with Thatchers challenge from a few seasons back.

His head? It wasn't Messi he was kicking out at, he hit him square in the chest. I am not saying it wasn't a straight red, but the ball was in the area (by his head), it wasn't like Roy Cunt stomping on Alfie in an obvious attempt to injure.

You have got to look at few facts here though

A) De Jong is no Makelele or Dechamps. I'm sure he'd love to be but he is blessed with lot less ability than them. He has got to make do with what he has got.

B) They were playing against midfield of Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Busquets and later Fabregas in a World Cup final. What are you going to do. He is not going to be able to challenge players of that calibre in movement and cutting off passes nicely. He had to do what he had to do in those circumstances and honestly, I can understand him. He can't just raise his hands up and say "fair enough, you are all better than me".

C) Dutch game plan clearly was to rough some feathers on Spain midfield and van Bommel and De Jong was clearly instructed to stop their passing game by any means necessery
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

yr such a douchelick. Biggest match of his career and he mistimed a kick with shocking results...you could tell by how he reacted that he knew he was lucky not to get Red, and the fact that you, as a City fan who should know De Jong, don't get that then i dunno what to say.

Some other asshole blogger on ESPN.COM called him the "dirtiest player" at the WC. Why don't you go google him up and you two can sit down and have a nice fireside chat and bake some smores and talk about big, bad, mean Nige together, ok?

cheers

That one challenge as nasty and all as it was I can forgive it was his entire attitude, I dunno if it came from his coach, if it did than he is a bigger disgrace. its not one challenge its everytime the dutch (who i backed and love) played stronger opposition instead of being hard and fair, they were dirty and nasty and DeJ was pivotal in this. Going over the top on tackles, cynical fouling just isn't what I expect of him, I wouldn't care if he accidently kicked someone in the head, or broke a leg it was his attitude. I suppose FIFA are to blame.
I don't fell im being over the top but imho a player I really admired has spoiled his rep and never has anyone disappointed me is such a way.

Apart from the one admittedly thuggish moment, he was nowhere near as bad or dangerous for the rest of the game as for example Paul scholes.

I think refs will target him now because of this so he'll have to be careful. On the upside the opposition will also be wary of him. If DeJong's performance in the World Cup makes him a disgrace though, then so were people like Summerbee who did everything DeJong does & worse.

He was the best def mid at the world cup. The bit that impressed me the most about his game at the tournament was how comfortable he was on the ball and his range of passing.

A shocking tackle and he deserved a red. However, that tackle masks a brilliant tournament.
