Manchester City a long way from standing on the shoulders of giants

By Rory Smith Football Last updated: July 24th, 2010

For all the riches, for all the recently-acquired glamour, there is nobody inside or outside Manchester City who doubts that the most ambitious project in English football history is far from complete. £65 million may already have been spent this summer, £200 million or so in the last two years and upwards of half a billion, give or take, in total when wage commitments over the next few years are taken into consideration, but this is very much a work in progress.

That is not a knee-jerk assessment from an evening in which City were thoroughly outclassed by Sporting Clube de Portugal, an attempt to read grand meaning into a game devoid of significance. This was – at best – City’s third team, featuring just two players, Vincent Kompany and Adam Johnson, likely to feature when their season opens against Tottenham next month.

Sporting, too, inspired by the electric Yannick Djalo, who scored one simple headed goal and one wonderful effort from a Carlos Saleiro flick, have the distinct advantage of standing just a week from the start of their season. City have almost four before they must be at their peak.

But, mitigating circumstances aside, this was an educational evening for all concerned. The scale of the task awaiting Roberto Mancini can not be in doubt: if he is to mould his side into potential title challengers, he must cut a substantial amount of chaff and replace it with yet more premium wheat. He should start, on this evidence, by sending Jo out to stud, though probably not literally.

But there is a greater challenge awaiting City than simply cracking English football’s ever-weakening Big Four cartel. There is a far more exclusive clique they wish to belong to, and how difficult membership is to obtain was spelled out in the stands of the Red Bull Arena.

In one corner, a boisterous group of City fans made their presence felt, offering America their own extraordinary renditions of Blue Moon. But they were drowned out by the sea – well, small freshwater lake – of Sporting fans among the 13, 586 crowd. In fact, there may have been more Benfica shirts than City in the audience, though they were, presumably, supporting the same side.

That may seem strange in a tournament which has been advertised here through the Premier League prism. Thierry Henry is the star attraction, in no small part down to what he achieved in England, while City and Tottenham are supposed to provide the top-class opposition, the litany of household names, by which the standards of the native product can be judged. It is they – particularly City – who have dominated the media build-up to the event, at home and abroad.

And yet the biggest club here, in terms of history certainly and in terms of fanbase possibly, have passed by relatively unnoticed. For all that City and Spurs are undoubtedly fine clubs, laden with tradition and importance, Sporting are the only true global giants present in New York.

For all that they have suffered, as all major clubs in smaller television markets have, in the brave new world of football, Sporting are one of that elite group of clubs who will always stand among the greats. They may no longer be kings of the global game, but, whatever the vicissitudes of the now, they remain its hereditary peers.

It is that status which City aspire to, that ability to go anywhere in the world and be able to count on the fervour of thousands of fans, that gilded history, that place in the pantheon. It is something that requires more than money. It requires time, and it requires titles. City, as Garry Cook might say, are at the beginning of that journey. It will be a long one.

...and what bit of that annoyed you?
We certainly don't fit into the category of global yet and to the outside World we are still pretenders to any throne.
He is quite right to suggest that we have a long way to travel on our journey.
he even makes the point that we played with a weak side who are still weeks away from peak fitness.

It was a pre season run around...what's the problem?

It's getting ridiculous. Unless a journalist heaps prise upon us and tips us for the treble, he's a wanker. I pointed to this in the Donavon thread a couple of days ago, there's a lot of it on the board at the moment.

It's a reasonably balanced article and you need to be on the look out to be offended to take issue with it.

I have learned not to read in to any tabloid shit. They have always loved to have a go at City anyway as far back as i can remember.Laugh it off as bitterness and just get on with it.If we ever win anything it will be madness
City are the club to talk about now.Even if we are making the headlines by signing a quality player like Yaya or Silva the next day we will be blamed for inflating prices
Could not care less the only reason they are complaining is because they see us as a major threat now.

What is there in the article that could be classed as "bitterness"?

Also, it's from the telegraph, hardly "tabloid shit".

The tabloids would have harped on about the result and performance, he correctly dismissed it as a meaningless pre-season friendly, more so than some supporters on the comments in the match thread. Just said that currently Sporting have a bigger International following and we are still something of a work in progress. Maybe it is becuase they have a big Portugese expat following in NY but I can't see anything to complain about.

The money bit is the only bit that would piss me off. including future wages in our expenditure so he can throw a ridiculous random figure is pathetic. It's like me saying im a millionaire because i might earn that much in the next 45 years of working.

It´s not just the ex-pat community - New York has an enormous number of Portuguese descendents - prolly would have been the reverse had the game been played in eg. somewhere like Oz

I actually thought he was fair, pointing out what most of us have said in the match thread, pointing out who`s lame and also pointing out where we all want to be and it`s not going to happen tomorrow. We`re 4 weeks behind a full strength sporting.

That was a good article - it put the relative readiness of both the teams into context and played down the significance of the result, and finished by saying we are just starting out on the road to being a 'global brand'.

I don't see anything wrong with the article either. What I do get annoyed about is when they say on sky that a weakened chelsea team get beaten by ajax and a strong city team get beaten by sporting. Everybody is hoping we fail this season and there's a huge amount of jealousy out there at the moment. Manure have no money, Arsenal have money and won't spend it, Liverpool are resigned to buying out-of-contract signings and Chelsea will just add one or two players. The whole media circus out there are begging with all their might for us to fail, we will be destroyed by them this season if we do so let's get behind the club and win something so they can shut the fuck up.

Nice post Pickled Gurkin. All of us, Manager, Players and Supporters are going to need very thick skin this season and if we do have to go into siege mentality, then so be it. However, I can assure anyone who feels the need to a have a pop at me personally, will get their words rammed dutifully down their throats.
