Shay back to full fitness

Postby Mark (Blue Army) » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:23 pm

Shay Given is hoping to play some part in tomorrow morning’s game against Cub America in the Georgia Dome.

The Republic of Ireland international trained under the closed roof last night and will join the race to start the Premier League season between the posts for the Blues either here in Atlanta or at the weekend in Baltimore against Inter Milan.

Only ten days ago Given was still using crash mats as part of his daily diet of training and taking part in swimming and tennis sessions to augment his movement and fitness.

But now he is raring to show Roberto Mancini that he is ready to resume his role as number one.

Given and England international Joe Hart were at either end in the Blues last warm up session in front of around 700 fans at an open training session.

Afterwards the Irishman, a firm crowd favourite judging by the number of autographs he signed, declared himself in tip top shape.

“I have not spoken the manager yet but I am hoping to play a part in the game against Club America and if not tomorrow then certainly at the weekend,” declared the keeper

"The shoulder is better than ever and
that is credit to the medical lads here
at City who have been unbelievable
with me this summer. All credit to
them"

“I have pushed myself hard but not harder than I have any other time I have been injured. All you ever want to do as a player is play. It is no different than being a kid and being desperate to get out on the pitch or the street to kick a ball about. Being injured is incredibly frustrating.

“I feel sharp and full of optimism for the season ahead and can’t wait to get into a game situation.”

Summer signing Yaya Toure and England World Cup returnees Shaun Wright-Phillips and Gareth Barry are also expected to return to the fray against the well-prepared Mexican side in Atlanta. The game kicks-off at 1am UK time.

A crowd approaching 50,000 is expected in the huge indoor arena that is home to the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League.

Club America also trained last night at the stadium on a newly laid pitch that will be removed after the match.

Very good news indeed, but I hope Joe still gets a fair crack at it.

Agree with that, although Joe has really underwhelmed me on the tour so far, i've found myself sort of missing shay, honestly didn't think i'd be feeling like this, thought once Joe got even a half chance he'd take the number 1 spot, so far im not so sure he will, that said i hope he gets more games to prove himself in a more established line up :D
