PATRICK Vieira looks set to miss the start of the season after he was sent off in Manchester City’s 3-0 defeat by Inter Milan in Baltimore yesterday.

Mexican referee Baldomero Toledo felt Vieira elbowed Italy international Marco Materazzi, the victim of Zinedine Zidane’s infamous butt in the 2006 World Cup final.

TV replays showed little malice in the clash but the incident was similar to one involving Wayne Rooney in a pre-season match in Amsterdam in 2006 when he also saw red.

Rooney’s dismissal for “violent conduct” meant a three-match Premier League ban and City’s assistant manager Brian Kidd begged for common sense.

“Patrick has gone for the ball,” he said. “He genuinely didn’t see the player. There was no intent there. Hopefully people will realise that it wasn’t a genuine foul. To be banned for the start of the season would be very harsh.”

as far as i can tell he brings things to a stop, while he works out what he is going to do.. by which time he has lost the ball already or all his team mates have moved on. He brings a very experienced lack of momentum and spark to the team.

Nope. He's utterly useless, he brings nothing but experience to the squad, something he can give without being named in the 25.

In the squad? yes
In the team? no

Vieira I am sure brings locker room leadership and will also be an inspiration and senior figure to our younger players
He's also handy in games against the so called lesser teams where some other players don't seem to turn up (De Jong is especially guilty of this I feel)
So yes, I want him in the squad but he wouldn't be my first choice midfielder

I am happy to have him around the squad but not in it.In the games where he can be useful rather than a liability I think we should be blooding the younger ones like Ibrahim,Tutte,Kay and maybe Clayton rather than just giving game time to Vieira ro rest others.

Vieira is likely to be suspended for City’s next three friendlies – but he will not be banned for the start of the Premier League season.

FA rules introduced in 2009 state that suspensions picked up in pre-season friendlies will not apply to competitive fixtures unless there are exceptional circumstances.

An FA spokesman explained: “There was a rule change last year. If you pick up a suspension in a friendly, it applies to friendlies – but not to Premier League games.”

Agree 100% with that. He is worth "wasting" a spot in the 25 for IMO. The interviews with him in the USA (I think it was related to that Carl Lewis talk and maybe another one) showed me the reasons why Mancini would want him there for his personality, presence and influence.

For the younger players the simple fact is, to many of them he will be a bloody legend and someone they will definitely be inclined to listen to. We have a bloody young and relatively inexperienced squad.

The likes of Bellamy, Barry and Given have got PL experience but they have between them got very little in the way of even domestic honours. Vieira has won the bloody lot (with the exception of European club trophies)....that's why the younger players (even the likes of Kompany and De Jong) will listen and learn from him

Well to be accurate I don't really care. I didn't care last season when people were whipping themselves into a frenzy over his signing and I still don't care. The Paddy saga has become an OCD wet dream for a worryingly large number of people

absolutely definitely and categorically not in the Prem 25 at the expense of someone who can play or even looks like they might be able to.
possibly in the europa 25
definitely in the cup squads and lurking in the dressing room.

In the end i rekon this might be why Bobby wants Milner. if Yaya is out for some reason and we have to rely on Vieira you can chuck your dreams of title challenges and should get nervous about 4th or 5th imo.

I dont think we had a great deal of choice when it came to resigning Vieria. I think the option was for the player to extend his deal rather than the club.

He's played alot of games in pre season and I think he's looked pretty garbage almost everytime ive seen him.

I personally dont think we need to carry him at all. All the talk of needing him for experiance seems a bit much. In midfield we have a champions league winner and ex barca player, a 29 year old england international with 12 years premier league experiance, and a world cup finalist.

I dont see the point of carrying him.

The Football Association has stated that Patrick Vieira should be able to play in the opening game of the Premier League season.

The 34-year-old was sent off for an apparent elbow on former Inter Milan team-mate Marco Materazzi in Manchester City's 3-0 defeat by the Nerazzurri at the weekend.

Despite the match being a friendly, some reports suggested that the Frenchman would receive a ban for his dismissal and not play against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, but the FA has confirmed that this is unlikely.

"If a player gets a red card in a friendly he gets a ban for his next friendly, not for competitive matches," said an FA spokesman.

"If it is overseas, it is dependent on it being reported to us by the host FA.

"In general terms, we retain the right to charge players in the most serious of misconduct cases and make sanctions applicable to competitive first-team fixtures if it is felt necessary."

The spokesman indicated the incident involving Vieira was not viewed as being such a case.

Rafa Benitez's Inter side ran out comfortable 3-0 winners after Vieira departed the field, with Victor Obinna opening the scoring via a deflection off Micah Richards, an own goal from Joleon Lescott doubling the Nerazzurri's lead and Cristiano Biraghi sealing matters.

City assistant manager Brian Kidd felt the decision to send Vieira off was harsh, saying: "Patrick has gone for the ball.

"He genuinely didn't see the player. There was no intent there. Hopefully people will realise that it wasn't a genuine foul."
