The 20 year-old has managed just 33 minutes in a Manchester City shirt since his £22 million transfer from Inter Milan last month.
Having sustained the injury in the closing stages of the 1-0 Europa League victory against FC Timisoara in Romania on Aug 19, in which he scored after coming on as a substitute, the damage had initially been dismissed by the player as a persistent cartilage problem.

But a period of rest failed to resolve the injury and Balotelli underwent surgery in Italy last week after tests highlighted damage to the lateral meniscus.

Initial optimism that the Italy forward would be fit to return within six weeks has now been dashed, however, following a routine post-operation examination at the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia on Monday.

Balotelli has now been told to expect a recovery period of eight to 10 weeks, with more pessimistic forecasts suggesting a January return could be the worst-case scenario.

With fellow striker Emmanuel Adebayor troubled by a hamstring injury and both Roque Santa Cruz and Jo struggling to convince manager Roberto Mancini of their value to the team, Balotelli’s injury problems are likely to increase the pressure on Carlos Tevez to shoulder the goalscoring burden.

If Balotelli returns within eight to nine weeks, he could yet feature in the Manchester derby at Eastlands on Nov 10. But a return against Birmingham three days later or Fulham on Nov 21 appear more realistic targets following the assessment of his rehabilitation schedule.

We do seem to have a few this season but there seem to be a lot of injuries this season. Some of the usual suspects but so far only Chelsea seem to have dodged the bullet.

When he went down in Romania, I immediately though...Lake.

I know that sounds ott, but the nature of those injuries is a worry. Bell, Lake, Bojinov, MJ, others too, we have had more than our fair share of bolloxed knees.
After the ball was centred, after the whistle blew...

When he went off injured, I have to say that first thought that came to my mind was Bojinov. Extremely talented but injury prone. Let's just hope this is one off.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

We only seem to have the word of a bloke from the Telegraph who often gets things wrong so far. It may be he's got this one wrong too. We could do with a better source before taking it as true.

I wondered why Balotelli said he was short of muscle around that knee at the time it happened. If that's the case he needs to work on growing some, because he'll certainly get kicked on it when he comes back.

I was a bit laughed at when I said during the match when it happened that this looked really really serious... I am pissed off that it seems like I was right.

This is exactly what I feared... Balotelli out, Adebayor out.... RSC and Jo not good enough... next thing will be Tevez getting injured, then we can forget about this season.

I too have great reservations over the medical staff doing these medicals on transfer. Do they test sufficiently or is it just say ahh, cough and fill that jar....

What are you all waffling about...Balo has no previous injury concerns...it was just bad luck...a bit of a knock...he will be back and hungry as fuck...hopefully just before the derby ;-)

Does Bellers have a recall clause that we could use in January??

Good question! But I kind of doubt Mancini would recall him... besides he is not named in the 25 man squad so even if we recalled him, we wouldn't be able to play him...

City dismiss Balotelli reports
Manchester City assistant manager Brian Kidd has described reports that Mario Balotelli is set to be out of action until the end of November as nonsense.

Balotelli was recently sent back to Italy to begin rehabilitation after a knee operation that City hoped he would be back from within a couple of months.

Yet sources in Italy earlier this week claimed the damage was more extensive than City initially thought and that Balotelli would not be ready to play for another 10 weeks at best.

However, now back in Manchester, Balotelli is apparently on course to return exactly as scheduled, with Kidd completely bemused about where the revised comeback date had emerged from.

"There is nothing sinister in this," countered Kidd. "Mario has had the operation, he has come back and is now on with his rehabilitation.

"Wherever these other rumours are coming from, they are nonsense."
